Is it okay to use other productions (eg: film) to support a point that you are saying, or it just a no-no (as markers may think you haven't studied text). My teacher said its okay, but recently some other people have been saying not to.

Yep, looks like the general consensus from my school and you is not to do it, thanks! i just have to cut a few sentences out of my essay

It's better not to. You're discussing it from a textual, rather than a cinematic or theatrical perspective.
