Hey could someone please tell me the chances of getting a nice paying job at a large investment banking firm in sydney eg macquarie bank, if i graduate from ANU with most likely a commerce or finance/ law degree. What ive gathered from the forum tells me that even though ANU is one of the best unis, it is better to go to unsw or usyd as their graduates are more employable and have better starting salaries and in higher demand from large companies than say graduates from ANU

This is really playing on my mind cos i want to go to ANU because of its rep and realistic uai but people have been saying that only unsw and usyd graduates get the good jobs.

Obviously graduates from Sydney unis have better chances at Sydney jobs than Canberra grads because they can have done internships etc in Sydney companies.

On the other hand coming from ANU doesn't make it impossible either, you just might have to work a little harder. The payoff being that ANU so comphrensively kicks arse (I think you can guess my preferance order) as far as student life/experience goes.

If you're really worried then consider doing honours which would distinguish yourself from other applicants for the Sydney jobs.

Anyone who thinks that if they go to a certain uni will guarantee a high paying job has rocks in their head!!!

If i remember right, the CEO of VirginBlue is from Victoria Uni of Technology.

Most people in this forum would think if you go to UMelb you get the best job. Employers do look for uni marks, personal skills, knowledge etc etc

I remember when I was working for the Comm Govt - all they care about what uni you are from is whether it is accrediated by the australian govt i.e it doesnt matter what uni you are from as all public unis in australia are accrediated!!!

ANU is a very good University. Their law and economics/business type degrees are very good. ANU is arguably the best university in Australia and better than universities in Sydney so you have nothing to worry about going there.

I would go there myself if I could afford accomodation.

But i've read from other threads which have stats to show that for example the Big 4 accounting firms employ significantly more graduates from UNSW and USYD than from ANU.

maybe thats cuz anu doesnt have good graduates....

but the same thing is bugging me.... only the uws people are assertnig the fact that wateva uni u goto u have a chance at any job...

those are VERY special cases... cases which have experience like vacation work and rave references - i.e. perfect people... with luck...

u cant just go around telling people that shit seriously, if this person goes to anu on ur word and wastes 5 years of their life..... seriously.... its a huge issue...

not only is it a waste of time, its a waste of money, its a pretty shit life in anu, compared to sydney, aware from ur family ur friends... i mean i would love to go, so long as someone showed me that they get mad jobs... i mean its a pretty crap uni in terms of marketing, all they rely is on their research projects.. i mean hu cares... show us some results on terms of graduate outcomes ffs....

really frustrating...

and believe me, it does matter what uni u goto, especially in commerce....

becase i know a CPA, hu recruits people, and basicaly they go sydney 1st unsw 2nd then the rest macquarie, uts... the only reason u see all those uts graduates getting jobs in the big 4 is because of cadetships.... generally the others are from unsw and usyd... with a few from mac....

good graduates as in notable graduates or as in a good graduate program? many people come to anu because of its excellent graduate programs and research facilities. as with all uni's i'm sure there are some notable graduates! (just don't ask me to name one anytime soon ;))

if you can't get a job from studying at anu then go overseas, anu is widely recognised :p

Yes..
I dont think there's much benefit from going to ANU in canberra for an undergrad degree..they are more or less the same as the UNSW/USyd degree (for commerce)..going to ANU to do a postgrad research degree is a different story though - because ANU is the best research uni in Aus (as proven in those ranking thingo's)

Thanks for all your inputs... another quick question, does anyone know the size of the commerce/economics faculty at ANU, like how many undergraduates are there compared with USYD and UNSW.

with a bit of research...

ANU has about 2,700 undergrads in the Commerce/Eco faculty

UNSW about 4,100 undergrads
USyd about 3,700 undergrads

I think you have to be realistic here guys...ideally all uni degrees would be of the same value in the working world, but the fact is they're not. Unis specialise in certain areas, so they can't all be the same quality. Plus it is true that your 'employability' does depend on more than just your results, experience and personality alone. Of course it's different for every individual and in some cases you can get through solely on that, but most of the time your uni does come in to it. Compare the UAIs of UC and USYD. I know this doesn't indicate that one is higher quality than the other, but it does indicate that there is more demand for USYD than there is for UC. If you had to choose between 2 applicants with identical results and experience, an employer is almost always going to go for the applicant who attended the uni with the higher UAI and profile, because it indicates that that applicant was able to reach a high standard in a more competitive and in-demand course.Sometimes your personality etc may win them over, but it's rare. Credentials mean a lot when all you have to go by is a couple of pages CV and a half hour interview.

But UAI doesn't mean much at all. It is simply a demand vs supply. Obviously you are going to have less demand in a place with 2 universities in a city of 300 000. As compared to having 5 or so in a city with 4 million.

The world isn't that simple, natstar. The institutions reputation (for better or worse) shall be considered alongside the individual no matter the situation. I am not saying that it will determine your chances of gaining proper employment, but it will be considered.
