When Hertz was measuring the speed of light, to create the standing wave, did he reflect the wave back on itself? like reflect the waves 180 degrees back off a mirror, or did he just reflect the waves at a small angle, and measure the interference where they intersected.

Because everywhere I look I get the assumption that he reflected the waves across each other at a small angle, but I don't understand how this would create a standing wave.

Any assistance is appreciated. Cheers :)

I think he reflected it off a metal surface and then made a wave that reflects back on itself by varying the frequency or changing the distance between source and reflection material.

Then the wave interferes with itself, causing a standing wave.
