I'm about half way through the first module "Production of materials" and in all honesty it is quite boring (to me), containing a lot of theory which requires memorising (properties of polymers, their uses, social impacts, etc).
Is this what HSC chem is like?
To give an example, the properties of PVC include water resistance, rigidity, chemical inertness among other things which make it suitable for application such as water pipes, raincoats, etc. I don't see how the elemental atoms (chlorine) constitute to those properties (in comparison to polyethylene). So how would I know this other than memorising information? How does the HSC differentiate the top from the bottom?
The preliminary course was a lot more intuitive and logical: learning about the fundamentals of bonds, atoms etc and from there deriving certain properties of substances (etc etc). It all seemed to connect to form one grand picture.
