i was just wondering how the hsc internal assessment marks work.

if, for example, i came third in a subject does it mean even though i'll do my best in the HSC, the best mark i can get will always be third?

My understanding of the process is this:

if you are ranked first in your school assesments you gain the highest mark obtained in the HSC exam as your school assessment mark out of 50. If you come second in your school assessments you do not automatically obtain the 2nd highest mark as it is adjusted by how far below 1st you came and this continues as you proceed down the rankings. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

i was told that your rank will never change - your marks will always be adjusted and alligned to reflect your rank in relation to other students in your grade; apparently something to do with the fact that assessments and the way they mark vary across different schools e.g. easy exam and easy marking vs. hard exam and hard marking.
Im not sure if this is true; this is just what i was told.
