The Information Processes and Technology (IPT) Stage 6 course investigates computer-based information systems. It is important for you to realise that these information systems are part of our everyday life. In order to understand and develop information systems successfully in this course, you need to be able to appreciate these systems in real-world contexts, rather than simply rote-learn facts about information systems.

Think about the network at your school, local library or perhaps where you have a part-time job. Where is information held about you, how is it held, what are the implications if this information was to be sold or given to a third party?

Look around you, investigate information systems, ask questions. What is the purpose of the system? Inquire about the information technology used such as hardware and software, identify the data and the participants and the environment of the system.

The IPT course
The core content of the IPT HSC course involves students undertaking project work to investigate information systems while studying communication systems, information systems and databases.

As well as the core, the students investigate two of the following optional strands:

 Transaction processing systems
 Decision support systems
 Automated manufacturing systems
 Multimedia systems.

The IPT syllabus is available from the Board of Studies website in the HSC syllabuses section. While studying, use the syllabus to make sure you have covered all of the content that will be included in the HSC examination. The following material from the board's website will also be of assistance:

 2001 and 2002 HSC examination papers show the layout of the past examination and, more importantly, demonstrate the type of questions that may be asked.
 The marking guidelines for the 2001 and 2002 IPT papers indicate the approach that is taken in marking the examination questions.
 The notes from the examination centre are the comments that have been made by the markers and further indicate the markers' expectations.
 The Software and Course Specifications document provides information about the tools and software referred to in the syllabus.

Ask your teacher if you can access and use the 2001 and 2002 NSW HSC Standards Packages for Information Processes and Technology produced by the NSW Board of Studies. These CD-ROMs provide student responses that represent different levels of performance for selected examination questions. Analysing these answers helps you to understand what the markers are seeking in a good response.
