Is English always calculated in the HSC? I know that English is compulsory but if you do 12 units and english.. lets say advanced... was your worst performance you did in your HSC, would it be counted? Or is it exempted and must be counted unlike all the rest which might not?

No, English is always counted in your ATAR regardless.

Sorry, its always counted. However if you do 4 unit english, and mess up advanced, and do 12 units, the advanced wont count.
So yes at least 2 units of english is always counted.

Its always 2 units of English + 8 units of your best subjects.

Every subject you do is counted in your HSC certificate you get!!!
But 2 units of english + your best 8 units of everything else count toward you ATAR.
