Oooh, so Mother Nature needs a favor?! Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys! Nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese.

now the bloody right wing bastards want to rape the environment and expect no consequences
Actually it is left wing governments like the USSR, Cuba and China which have the worst records of environmental management.

"Right Wing Bastards" are the people who allow the economy to generate people incomes high enough to shift concerns from things like food and water, to environmentally cleaner technologies.

In fact greenies and global warming hysteria is the exact product of lefties living in a high income, free, right wing society. A society which by the way, if they ran things, would never exist.

what do u guys think about the idea that climate change has been greatly exagerrated to further the aims of globalism, erode national sovereignty, and allow a new world government (dictator?) to come into place?

conspiracy theory i know, just interested to hear your views.

lol don't shoot the messenger, its a theory i've heard thrown around. LOL al gore dictator that would b funny.

ok so it goes like this...

create an emergency (or make a big deal of a minor issue)

make it global

increase the drive for globalisation

organisations like the UN, the EU, etc. have more weight

more and more globalism

less and less national soverienity

not much before --> global government

and of course absolute power corrupts absolutely

not long before dictator

Silly, raccoons don't have garbage. And they totally live a carbon-neutral lifestyle which is all the rage right meow.

On topic- People want to believe that humans impact on the climate. If we fucked it up, we can fix it, right? If climate change is just the natural way of things, then all we can do is sit back and buy some shorts, which is much less empowering.

And damnit, who are we to infringe upon the free market? If climate change is bogus, then the state has no right to meddle in how people choose to throw away their money. Their money, their choice. The consumer is always right.

That's what I've been led to believe the stereotypical non-believer of climate change would want anyway...

I should probably have mentioned, before quoting Mr Burns, that I think humans probably are instigating some climate change. There are lots of unanswered questions but it seems to be a logical conclusion.

Actually a country's carbon emissions (per capita) are usually a pretty good indication of how rich the country is, how high its living standards are, etc.

Being more efficient won't really lower our emissions much anyway, especially with continued growth. It's certainly not the sort of thing these guys are talking about.

Carbon emissions and environmental impact are essentially market failure yes.
No, they're negative externalities, whether they constitute market failure depends on whether you buy into the current hysteria.

Notice he's a professor of mining geology and not a climatologist.

Mining Geology: [SIZE=-1]the branch of economic geology that deals with the applications of geology to mining
So that alone renders the article useless. Anyone can claim anything, I'm in my HSC year, therefore any comments I make must be taken as absolute fact when I describe the HSC. Look at me! I can publish an article now!

The problem with the scientific community is that when you're conducting research, you usually need funding. But when you get conclusive results, you don't get any mroe funding because it isn't needed. So sometimes you can't totally trust the information given because scientists might be giving the results that will result in more funding from their benefactors. Sure, these results may be very close to the truth ... but they're not the truth.
