i wouldn't call him a novice the guy is quite skilled at maths just by looking at all the solutions he has provided on this forum.

Tim, the "minimum" distance you found was only the minimum difference in y values between y=3x^2 and y=2x-1. But the real minimum distance is the perpendicular distance.

I think Drongoski is correct.
No I was wrong; I misread the quadratic as y = 3x^2 - 2x + 1
therefore 'min point' on parabola is now (1/3, 1/3) as shown by undalay

But by fluke the distance is the same = 2/3sqr(5).
