Does anyone know the easy way to convert the bit depth and resolution for video without using a calculator?

And does anyone know the REAL reason why we cant use a calculator?

do u mean the number of colours in the bit depth?
each one is doubled eg. 2^1 = 2
2^2= 4
2^3=8 ect ect

I memorise the entire two columns, but you've got to start from first principles as kieransgirl has said.

Take the bit depth as your exponent (or power).
Your tones or colours will then be the result of your base raised by your exponent (bit depth).

2^1 = 2
2^2 = 4
2^3 = 8
2^4 = 16

Keeping the same base (to two), your bit depth will be your exponent ("power", aforementioned).

Your answer will then be the total number of possible colours and tones.

Stop at 2^8 (65536).
:)

Real reason for why we can't use a calculator?
Because we become lazy thinkers with automation/computers. :D

Like typing out your answers/responses? :p

Spellchecks, hidden files/directories, cheat notes, binary/dec calculators, the list goes on...

Not an accurate analogy, but why don't we use calculators? Because everyone is lazy eating donuts? (stereotype, I admit).

The BOS (board) are scummy, hehehehe. (I can say that now, without fear). That is, unless they decide to mess around with my ranks and marks after reading this :p

The reason we weren't allowed to use calculators doesnt matter - what does matter is that, by not allowing us to use calculators, they shouldnt put questions in the exam that require a calculator... basically - it was all just better for us. Much easier calculations = much easier questions.
