So as of today, it's happened. From Sportal.com.au:

Rabbitohs bid approvedSportal
The $3 million bid by businessman Peter Holmes a Court and actor Russell Crowe to privatise the South Sydney Rabbitohs has been approved by the club's members in a vote on Sunday.

The wealthy pair achieved a 75.8 per cent majority vote at the extraordinary general meeting, 0.8 per cent above the figure required.

Holmes a Court and Crowe will now acquire a 75 per cent controlling interest of the football club.

Over a 1000 members attended Sunday's meeting, where Holmes a Court, Crowe and the chief opponent to the move - former Souths Juniors boss Henry Morris - all spoke.

Superstar actor Crowe was the last to address the crowd, attempting to allay any fears that may have been associated with the bid.

What does everyone reckon? They only just got it by .8% !!

Copious, I reckon you should move this into the NRL thread.

gracie007,

In response, it's the best DECISION South Sydney has made in the last 25 years. Without a doubt.

And George Piggins saying that he will never involve himself in the club again is the best THING to happen to South Sydney since he took over in '89 .. coincidentally, it was the last time they ever made the Finals.

Now Souths will have sponsorship and money. They should finally be able to attract good players instead of other club's rejects.

I think it is well within the realms of possibility that Souths could be a top four team by 2008.

No, but money keeps a team afloat, which is what they needed right now. With Crowe in charge, they can probably afford the coach and training needed to become a fighting force in the league.
