Okay, I'm a bit confused about prototyping.

I've read about prototyping being done to the current system and to the final product, but that's all i know.. can anyone expand on this concept? ><

A prototype is like a working model of the final system.

Its main purpose is to gather information from the user , so the developers can determine exactly what the user wants from the system..

So basically a visual representation of the system , to understand the solution exactly

It may not contain like all teh features of the developed system obviously lol , maybe jsut the Graphical user interface, for example....... but like i said its showing the design of teh system

It can actually be turned into the final solution if the developer chooses to do so! but normally its just used for a representation of the system....

its very good for improving communication wtih the end user
as well as givign a hands on approach towards the system

anyway Sleep time

But what about prototyping the current system? how does that work?

Advantages
Makes problems/needs become more clear
Involves user with development (user become familiar with the system, understands the system)
Feedback from user allowing improvements/refinements to be made
Improves communication skills between users & developers. (Previously mentioned by Seraph)

Disadvantage
User may lose interest in old systems
May result in an endless cycle of refinement (this is from SDD, so dont take into consideration too much)
Time consuming
Requires good communication skills

u wont really be asked to do a prototype on the current system. but if it does come up, jst mension that it identifies any problems associated with the sytem as it allows participant feedback, thus allowing modification to occur.
It will more likely ask u to explain why prototype is used for a new system. Then u jst answer the question as seraph did

Prototypes are a working model of an information system. They are built to better understand the needs of the system by getting participants to test it for errors and quote of good and bad things in the design of the system.

The advantages of a prototype can be anything form examining, more accurately, the needs of a system as well as participants having the opportunity to be involved earlier in the development of a system and the new systems being easier to create from a prototype because it doesn’t have to be started from scratch.

Another disadvantage of prototypes is that it doesn't always take into consideration the technical design of the system, for example it could just be a simple model, so it can produce false expectations for the users
