Describe the use of a named isotope in agriculture...

CAn anyone tell me the properties and the function of the isotope

*Gamma rays from a cobalt-60 source are used in agriculture to sterilize food giving it a longer shelf life
* It destroys the bacteria on some foods however it may change the food which may be negative to some people with health concerns.

* the majority of its emitted energy is used (so its very efficient)
* considered low risk
* penetrates deeply
* decays to non-radioactive nickel
* relatively slow irradiation of food though

that's all i can think of off the top of my head... probably a few more properties...

i rem. somethin' like radioactive carbon can b used to see the absorption rates of fertelisers by plants....for properties put stuff like desired half life, etc.
