Beattie should be returned with ease. It will take at least two more elections before the coalition will ever stand a chance..

They have elections in Queensland?

I thought they used the "whoever can slam their club down the hardest becomes village chief" system up there.

Send PM a message: Beazley

Well its quite obvious what Beazley is trying to do. Beattie is all but assured of victory, so Beazley is attempting to pin the win on Federal IR issues. No doubt Beazley will hit the airwaves tomorrow remarking that the QLD result was due to Workchoices, which clearly it will not be.

If anything, it would be a more favourable indicator to the federal government in that it conveys that the electors are less likely to change their vote, even in the face of serious issues.

Beattie wins historic fourth term

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has clinched a fourth term in government with a third successive landslide state election victory.
With a third of the vote counted tonight, Labor looked set to maintain its tally of 60 seats in the 89-seat parliament.
Mr Beattie is the first Queensland Labor leader to win a fourth term as premier since William Forgan Smith in 1941.
Labor appeared to have won the three Queensland seats it lost to the coalition in recent by-elections, according to early poll figures. [...]

ANALYSIS: Much-heralded protest vote never arrived

The Queensland election will go down as the one that got away and, at the same time, went nowhere. [...]

Voters clearly were in a mood to punish the Beattie government for failings focused most tragically in public health.

Just as clearly, however, they were more reluctant to embrace a Coalition characterised too easily as divided, underskilled, and unprepared.

The much-heralded protest vote did not arrive.[...]

So much for the Doctor Death scandal heralding the end of Beattie's run in Queensland.

well.. simply shows lack of leadership in australia.. srs we need some decent policies with rite leaders to promote them and lead by example.

to some extent john howard does this - he walk everyday in the morning how many mps do that? let alone pm in the world?.. it might small personal thing but the media are all over it glorifying it..

beazly is fat. beattie talks like true aussie bloke upfront and gives a then notion of fair dinkum.. but he was lucky cos the opposition were uptight asses..

Yeah, just talked to my friend from Queensland on MSN before and she wasn't at all suprised by the result. Beattie seems to be quite popular with people up there despite the problems their government has been having - quite charasmatic in a way perhaps?

What a suprise... :

IR won the Queensland election: Beazley

Queensland voters who returned the Beattie state government have sent a very clear message to Canberra on industrial relations, Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says.[...]

"But I'd say there is one initial factor involved in this victory, and that is by far and a long way the main cause of it," Mr Beazley said.

"And that is, a very clear message has been sent by the Queensland voters to (Prime Minister) John Howard: back off on industrial relations."[...]

And from this opinion piece in the SMH:

[...]For his part, Beazley has latched onto Beattie's opposition to WorkChoices labour laws as confirmation that his third tilt at the Lodge is somehow on track.

But if he believes Beattie's win was significantly influenced by WorkChoices he is deluding himself. WorkChoices has provided Beazley with a significant point of difference with Howard, but he will have to do the same on health, education and the economy to qualify to become the nation's next leader.
