Are we allowed to use R rated related texts? One of the english teachers said that if she was my teacher, she wouldn't mark my analysis of Clockwork Orange as it was 'inappropriate', but my teacher said it was fine. I'm confused. >_>

I would assume they are allowed, as our teachers have directly said your allowed to quote swear words etc...

Although it was not advised, because some teachers (like the one you said) absolutely hate it...

Anyway, my english teacher said it doesn't matter if it's R or not, for instance, Lolita or Fight Club. However, I would strongly advise to incline towards conservatism, in the event you do offend some teacher/marker with strong views against what you're arguing for.

It depends why it's R rated. If all the quotes you use are going to have swearing as every second word, then it's not a good idea, because although you're allowed to have quotes with swearing, most teachers recommend that you keep them to a minimum. If it's just ridiculously violent, then it's probably alright.
Also, there are varying degrees of R rated-ness. I'm told that in the US, you get an R rating for having fuck in a movie twice, which isn't that big a deal. Just avoid those two lines. In Australia, that will only get you an M. To get an actual R rating in Australia, as opposed to MA15+, then you have to have huge amounts of swearing, violence or sex, and the chances of something being inappropriate are much higher than a movie that's R in the US.

So, is there any written evidence stating that it's a risk to study a R-related text???? coz I know Fight Club is used in HEAPS of 4unit english major works [2 I think have even ended up in showcase] and that's rated R.. & i think my copy of hitchcock's psycho is rated R aswell [which has probably been reviewed].. it's incredibly difficult to find a crime writing/fiction related text that isn't R-rated!! by the time I sit the final HSC exam, i WILL be 18, so does that mean that the marker can't deduct marks for using an 'inappropriate' text?? is it fine as long as we don't delve into the vivid details of why it's R-rated and just deal more so with the concepts/techniques/quotes without swear words?? ak! this is such a dodgy issue!
