according to one of the uai calculators on the net, advanced english is scaled negatively. That can't be right can it??

Yep. I think you are confusing scaling with aligning. Aligning is when they adjust your raw mark which is usually positive eg when Lazarus got his raw marks, for english advanced he got 60s which got aligned to 70s. But the scaling, which is done by UAC can be negative

Im no expert on it, and unless you work for BOS you will not know exactly. It also changes year to year. From what i know its based on the difficulty on the test, and they work out what raw mark is the minimum to get into a certain band, and then work out all the other marks accordingly

Aligning is to show the standard you have achieved in respect to prescribed outcomes.
