Hi all,

How immediately do you have to choose your subjects for Commerce? The areas of study seem pretty diverse, and I wanted to get a decent amount of time to familiarise myself with them before committing to a specific area. Are the first few days/weeks of the semester a general overview of the degree or do you have to choose your subjects as soon as you enrol? Is all of this covered during O-week?

Thanks.

Hi.
I know for a commerce/law double degree you have to do three compulsory subjects in first year:
316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics 12.5
316-102 Introductory Microeconomics 12.5
316-130 Quantitative Methods 1 12.5

Then you choose two additional level one subjects. I believe you make your selection of subjects during enrolment (?) with the help of a UniMelb careers person. I think every student sits down with a careers person to select subjects.

I had the same concern, but I think in first year you should get a general feel of all subjects and then make a decision on which area of commerce to focus on after the first year. What course are you hoping to get into?

In O-week the academics try to persuade you.

At enrolment they ask if u want to specialise in actuarial or not, and if so, they will give you a sheet that has the actuarial subjects set out on them. If not, they will offer another form which is the "standard" form if you don't know what to do, that form has suggested subjects which allow you to later decide in 2nd year what to specialise in.

However, this is not exactly true. If you aim to specialise in accounting/finance and do honours it is probably best not to do managing people and organisations as they suggest on that form because you don't have enough room.

most people say managing people and organisations is a big waste of time unless you do a managment specialisation.

I will add some more detail regarding the different areas later

Thanks Turtle.
I have to do five subjects and I would like to focus my commerce degree part of my double degree on finance. So this is what I have so far:

1.)316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics
2.)316-102 Introductory Microeconomics
3.)316-130 Quantitative Methods
4.)333-101 Finance 1
5.)?

What do you reccomend I do as a fifth subject?

Oh and also....some second year subjects require you top have completed 75 points. Does this mean 75 points of commerce subjects or will my law subject points contribute to that 75 points too?

I think its across faculties but don't quote me. I only do 1 degree now so it doesn't affect me.

1.)316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics
2.)316-102 Introductory Microeconomics

If you don't do actuarial studies, you are basically limited to 1. ARA, 2. ATA, 3. BPA, 4. Managing People and Organisations 5. Business in Global Economy and 6. Principals of Business Law which is irrelevant if you are doing LLB.

1-3 as well as 6 are for Accounting people but Finance majors who aren't doing LLB like to do Business Law too, 5 and 6 are management subjects which I didn't touch because of lack of room.

I did same as you and the core accounting subjects but not Management subjects. If you haven't done accounting before you might struggle with ARA (1st 1st year accounting subject), but if you did (good in) VCE Accounting its simple enough. ATA (2nd 1st year accounting subject)is a bitch But they may have improved it now cause it was new when I did it. Business Process Analysis (BPA, another compulsory accounting subject for accounting majors) everyone hated and did shit in but I liked it because it was very "real world" business orientated. That was basically analysing...business processes lol. By all accounts PBL (bus law) was a big bludge subject cause you only needed to study 1 hour a week on the computer, and all the tests and exams were computer based multiple choice. No assignments either. Having said that most of my friends who did it didn't do THAT well.

Because you are Com/LLB you are restricted in what you can do. Basically its a choice between 1st year accounting subjects and 1st year management subjects for you. I personally recommend ARA only cause Managing people and organisations you can just read the book and understand, however, doing ARA alone is fairly useless since its not until 2nd year accounting that you start to understand what the machinations of the industry are all about.

You CAN major in Actuarial, however because you are restricted to 200 points in Law, Engineering and Property degrees, you have to see the Centre for Act. Studies for approval. They recommend against it because you will be hard pressed to meet the subject requirements. They will guide you on the right subjects for actuarial.

In case I'm confused myself, heres the primary source of info:

The subject choices are at the bottom of the page:

Thanks for the information.

I would be doing a straight commerce degree. My interests probably lie in Economics - depending on world events over the course of my degree, and what its actually like to study,

Thanks for the information, Turtle. I did not do accounting in my VCE so I may steer clear of it for the time being. Will of course use your advice coupled with other information I have read to make an informed decision when the time comes. Is it true that to so IB you need acturial, or with comm(finance)/law will I be OK?
