Okay, so I was employed by Myer over the Christmas break, and they've just rung and left a message saying they want me to come back and work as a casual. This is all good and fine, as it's money, and every teenager needs that .

But, the problem is that I'm aiming for a 99UAI and above, to get into MBBS at either USYD, UNSW or UWS. This is obviously very hard to obtain, and my subjects are all very heavy workloads.

I'm just enquiring on how many hours per week you think I should be studying to gain this, both in year eleven and year twelve.


Also, How many hours i should work per week, if at all in year and eleven and twelve.

I'm really confused and stressed about it, so thanks for all the help in advanced.

If I got a job at Myer and they showed keen interest in having me working there, I would probably leave school and work for the next couple years, maybe try to move up to management or something. Can always go back to TAFE for HSC..

That's fair enough. Getting a job won't necessarily just provide you with money. It will fulfil some of the social aspect of your life. It's quite crucial if you are to go through HSC.

I'm just enquiring on how many hours per week you think I should be studying to gain this, both in year eleven and year twelve.

There is no "set" amount. As they say, study smarter not harder. First use your year 11 to find out what type of study method works for you. Try:

1. writing notes
2. making some mind-maps
3. using iPod to listen to your notes (of course you need to record it first)
4. reading from your textbook
5. doing past papers
6. whatever method that might be of interest to YOU

Unfortunately, this person is probably like me. I want a lot of expensive things my parents are unwilling to buy me, so I get a job. That being said, I do pretty well. If I got the new ipod/new laptop/new camera for free, I wouldn't work. But I do. And I kinda like being a McSlave. Usually. S/he'll probably just have to cut down on work in year 12 tbh.

It might sound a bit strange, but I find working is pretty motivating with school work. If I know I'm working a certain shift one week, I know that I have to do my work before then which usually leaves me doing more work.

That being said, my job is very flexible with my shifts and I only usually work about 1 weekend shift per week (during school... school holidays is a bit more) and I can have time off when I need it. I think you have to see what works for you and what you're comfortable with. If you find it doesn't work, you can always move on.

i agree, working teaches really good time management and organisation skills, it also teaches you to just do the work, regardless of whether you feel like it or not.

i'd say work 6 hrs a week max. you need time to concentrate on school.

My maths teacher told me roughly 15 minutes of work per unit per night is a good standard to set yourself to do. This is all flexible, but for most subjects 30 mins a night on that subject should be enough, unless you're doing extensions etc. An extra 15 mins per unit on Weekends for study should be enough, roughly 27 hours or so of work. About 12 of those are study hours, considering you will do 3 hours 15 mins a night of homework 5 nights a week, so that should be plenty of time to do assessments, and leave time to study, make notes etc, meaning you get a lot of work done. It's not much when you break it down and it's pretty flexible, meaning your 99 UAI shouldn't be too hard. It may be slightly more because you have 13 units, but it should be doable. I don't think there would be much time for working at Myer though, you will probably need to work pretty hard. I dunno really.

i think getting a job would be very useful for time management skills but if you plan on gettin into MBBS, that's a different story.

I would still think you have a good chance with UWS, as the minimum UAI required is 95.

same kind of situation except my employer is hungry jacks, and im aiming more actuarial studies instead of medicine,
but im only working 6 hours a week (sunday 8-2), so i still have saturday and sunday night to do homework and study (as well as normal weeknights)
i think next year i might take about 6 or so months off from about february until the end of the hsc because studying those 6 hours will be MUCH more important than working to earn a bit of money
i mean after the hsc, and after uni, and getting into the course you want to get into, you can get a job and earn as much money as you want..

It's really not hard to work part time and still get your school stuff done, especially in year 11, but even for year 12. Also I found working was a welcome break from school work
