A female carer struggled to drag a helpless disabled woman from a rail crossing moments before the woman was struck and killed by a train, Perth police say.

The 54-year-old woman from Lathlain, who had cerebral palsy, fell from her motorised wheelchair and was killed at a crossing at the Carlisle train station on the Armadale line about 11.15am (WST), police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said.

"As she was crossing, her wheelchair for some reason has fallen over and she has been thrown out," Ms Weatherall said.

Ms Weatherall said the woman's carer had tried to drag her out of the train's path.

"The woman was in a motorised wheelchair with her 52-year-old carer, who tried to lift her but could not get her off the line," Ms Weatherall said.

The carer then had to jump out of the way for her own safety.

Ms Weatherall said it was unclear whether bells and flashing lights had given warning of the oncoming train when the woman tried to cross the tracks.

The train station was closed for several hours.

The Public Transport Authority (PTA), the Office of Rail Safety and the police are inquiring into the incident.

The PTA's David Hynes said the train driver was receiving counselling.

"He's been taken off the roster and he seemed okay at this stage, but it's obviously a terrible experience for him," Mr Hynes said.

"We also offer (counselling) to passengers or any of other staff who were there."

Police later told the Seven Network warning signals were working and the train driver had seen the woman.

However, the driver did not have time to stop the express train before it struck the woman.

The driver was receiving counselling.
