Hmmm...
I can't remember exactly how it went although my teacher told me to use a certain word which was spelt differently in the US.
What is correct in the VCE Exam situation?
I was not happy when she told me the spelling of the word even though you might get penalised in the exam, because she was unaccepting of the proper way. So i'm not interested in my teachers thoughts but only the examiners.

Where can i find words that are often mis-used?
There are a few just in this post that i am unsure about, here are a few I have just recently thought about:

fulfil/fulfill
spelt/spelled
mis-used/mis used.. when do you use the - ?
socialise/socialize

Perhaps someone can give more examples or provide a useful link.
Any particular way to recognise which is American and Australian?
In the exam which are you suppose to use?

'z' used instead of 's' are usually american

another one is labor/labour (hehe, I keep cheating on the 'u' in eco exams :D)

lol, I remember my english teacher going on and on about how theres no correct english spelling since no one has the absolute authority...

Seriously though? I DON'T think hsc markers will penalize you for using american spelling.
