P-plater escapes as car cut in half

A P-PLATER had a miracle escape yesterday when her car was torn apart by a truck on the F3 Freeway at Black Hill.

Firefighters said the 19-year-old woman turned out of the emergency U-turn lane and into the path of the oncoming truck about 10am.


The truck cut her sedan in pieces, sending the driver's section of the car flying one way and carrying the rear end along.


Despite the damage inflicted on her Honda Civic the woman walked away from the wreck with only a bump on the head and minor injuries to her shoulder and side. She was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.


Emergency services said they were amazed she survived. "She's amazingly lucky, amazingly," deputy fire captain Evan Dowling said. "We don't see many cars cut into two like that any more, it's a real lucky escape."


Newcastle Highway Patrol officers are investigating the crash and expect to speak to the woman over the weekend.


Tom Corey, who was driving the truck that collided with the car, said he initially thoughts things would be a lot worse. "I saw her turn out and I just went 'Oh shit'," he said. "She's very lucky."

He said the crash had caused about $60,000 worth of damage to his truck.

To prevent this sort of stupidity/laziness - RTA are trialling two new GATELOCK designs on the F3 at its Sydney end, near the big dipper. One design will be chosen and then applied eventually to ALL F3 existing signposted "Police & Emergency Service Vehicles Only" median located, U-Turn bays!

If you really want to do a U-turn on a freeway, stay out of the lanes until you are at at least 90km/h. My guess is she saw the truck and turned into the lane anyway thinking she would make it - i guess she forgot the truck was probably doing 120.

Freeway U-turn causes chaos on F3

Six people have been injured in a four-car collision after a car attempted a U-turn on a freeway in Sydney's north on Saturday.

A six-year-old boy suffered suspected serious head injuries and has been flown to hospital following the accident, which happened just before 10.30am (AEDT) near Mooney Mooney, on the Hawkesbury River.

A 45-year-old man has been flown and another man driven to the Royal North Shore Hospital, both with chest and back injuries, paramedics said.

A woman and a child have both been taken to Hornsby Hospital, while a 19-year-old woman has gone to hospital in Gosford.

"One car attempted to do a U-turn and has collided with three other cars," NRMA CareFlight director Ian Badham told AAP.

The CareFlight helicopter and an ambulance helicopter both landed on the freeway.

The six-year-old boy will be examined at a specialist neurological unit of The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Mr Badham added.

The RTA says all northbound carriageways on the F3 are closed with significant delays southbound.

Traffic is being diverted off the freeway at the Berowra exit.

The first horse race at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon has been delayed from 1.35pm (AEDT) to 2.15pm after jockeys were caught up in the incident.

So, 19 year old female P-plate driver attempts a U-turn on the F3. Again.

Oh, and it's not that you couldn't see the truck, the U-turn bay is only meant for emergency vehicles.

Maybe it's a flaw in the training? I mean really... which part of can't see traffic, traffic will be coming at high speed, and it's difficult for most cars (even high performance) to get upto the freeway speed quickly enough, do people not understand?!

It's not like it's the be all end all if you miss your turn... it's a hella lot better here in Australia where there's far more turnoffs and loop roads than say Malaysia where if you miss your exit, it could be a longgg time before the next one.
