This thread shouldn't belong here, however, a cousin of mine he is in year 8 and was wondering what maths textbook is good. Any suggestions?

Im thinking of:
- maths signpost
- cambridge spectrum
- New century

Yeah, maybe not appropriate for the maths forum.. lol..

We used New Century, it sucked! Signpost is now the 'standard' text for 9/10 Advanced.

Signpost... but who cares? It's junior maths. Not hard to do well, and even if you don't do well, you can still make up for it in years 11 and 12 (like me, to a large extent).

Maths works is pretty crap. Seems everyone used signpost.
...wtf?? Why do you say that? Signpost is like the basic textbook that the public schools use, I dont think many Selective schools use Signpost!

Maths works not crap?! sorry my apologies. I have to use 3 textbooks (lol) when i was in year 9 and 10. That is spectrum, signpost and mathsworks but i found mathsworks wasn't good.

Oh well, i was trying to help my cousin out. He is so keen and determined in maths lol.

okay ive used both maths signpost and new century
New century is really confusing unless you know exactely what's happening, the questions are harder and more in depth then those in signpost
Signpost is way more fun and it's way more creative

I think overall it depends on how your school devides up the course signpost does surds in year 9 while newcen does it in year 10.

Cambridge Spectrum. The Algebra and Trig Chapters are a little long winded though.

In my school we used two textbooks. One was Spectrum which was for homework and the other was Signpost which was for SOME classwork. Otherwise the teacher writes questions on the board as classwork.

New Century seriously stuffed up my maths in yr 10. Though our school was giving us Yr11 2U stuff, I was getting like 40% and 30% completely the test were way above our level.

But i'm doing alrite in 3U now, coming like 6th in the grade.

So NEVER USE NEW CENTURY.

i go to a selective and we used the cambridge spectrum for yr 9 and new century for yr 10

spectrum is good
new century is shit
and apparently oxford gives you the wrong answers at the back

if it was up to me id get one of those accelerated maths learning books
or go to your local library and trial them first hand!
