For a while it was slowly creeping into mainstream culture. The rise of playboy, the golden age of porn (and films like Deep Throat), pornogrind music, Torture porn/gorenography films, and porno chic fashion. However, if the government have their way, this will probably all come to a grinding halt.

I think reading should be compulsory first because the level of literacy is appalling.

The decision on whether to teach your children Christianity should rest solely with parents, not the government.

I'd be OK with it if was at a much later stage (year 7 at the earliest), and if all major religions were covered (and the course would have to be *extremely* well monitored to make sure that there is as little bias as possible). In fact it could be simply used to understand our culture, there is no doubt that religious texts haven't impacted the world, there are merits to understanding that. However, just covering the Bible, or teaching at a younger age, or both, (without parents permission, I'll note that sending a child to a private religious school would probably count as permission) is simply indoctrination, something that no government should support.

Is that true?
My understanding is that majority of Catholics accept evolution these days.
The Pope supposedly came out a few years ago in support of evolution, but if you read the text, it's really just support for non-literal creationism with maybe a smacking of micro-evolution. And these days the Pope's words aren't quite (excuse the pun) cardinal truth to all Catholics, so Tony might be a voice of dissent.

The majority of Catholics support evolution, contraception, and abortion (we're talking between 70% and 90% of Catholics, variously). Unfortunately Tony Abbott falls in the retarded 10% to 30%.

I don't like Abott, and would think that would make him more dangerous. But i would like to see some sort of quote from him that suggests that he falls in that retarted category.

Abbott thinks reading the bible should be compulsory. Rudd thinks the drinking age should be 21.

Perhaps politicians should get back to discussing and implementing things that help the nation's economic, health or education system function better. You know... important things.

Shouldn't vote labour because Rudd's slowly screwing the economy over, regardless of what he thinks. Shouldn't vote liberal because, well, Tony Abbott. Can't vote independent because they won't get enough votes. I'm screwed :(

I personally am in complete disagreement with Abbott. Let's face it, the only possible purpsoe of teaching religion is to teach kids about morality. But this is now unnecessary in a society where the same morals can be applied in a secular non-religious manner that accomodates everyone of all beliefs.

+1

Where would students even find the time to do this? Certainly not in school - and as if they would read it outside school.
