Bob Carr Resigns

A news conference will be held in a few minutes where Bob Carr will announce his retirement from state politics

Carr set to quit as Premier
By Anne Davies
July 27, 2005 - 10:43AM

After 10 years as NSW Premier, Bob Carr is expected to resign this morning.

Mr Carr has called an 11am press conference at his office in Govenor Macquarie Tower in the city.

Police minister Carl Scully and Health minister Morris Iemma would be the most likely replacements as Premier - with sources saying Mr Iemma could have the numbers to win a vote.

It is believed Mr Carr decided to resign after reaching the milestone of 10 years as Premier.

He is thought to be following in the footsteps of Neville Wran who also spent 10 years in the top job.

It is understood Mr Carr has no other jobs lined up.

Hmm

That came as completely unexpected news to me. I wonder what the implications are for Brogden now

Nonono.

Carr cannot go.
He is a master politician.
Without him the libs may have a chance.
What a disaster (if true)

No one else seems to have been groomed as leader, at least to the public.
What do we do?

*panic attack*

Carl Scully and Morris Iemma are said to be the two frontrunners...

Well at least he knows when to quit. It is always better to quit on a high, or early into your political decline, rather than wait and cling on the wreckage of a lost career.

The Alternative in the Labor party is pretty substandard.

Liberals may actually have a chance.

So. What next for Bob Carr? Federal politics isn't an option (he just ruled it out), so I guess that it's off to study American History?

Hmm....

morris won't get it. He isn't white.

I think the current deputy will get it. Andrew Refshaugy (or however you spell it)
Given the nature of the factional system, do you think that one from the Left will become Premier?

Still, Refshauge appears to have more of Carr's media flair than any of the other ministers.

Is anyone else terrified about the lack of quality options as a replacement?

Morris Iemma has closed his eyes and tried to ignore all the problems facing hospitals, Scully is one of the most hated politicians in the state and has the charisma of a wet sock ... the only real option is Refshauge.

The SMH poll, it shows most of the potential canditates. Appears Refshauge is emerging as the people's choice, but apparently Scully has the numbers in the party room

Who would you like to see as the new Premier?
Craig Knowles - 10%
Carl Scully - 14%
Morris Iemma - 10%
Andrew Refshauge - 20%
Frank Sartor - 15%
Carmel Tebbutt - 7%
John Watkins - 12%
Reba Meagher - 8%

Total Votes: 3877

Going to the left would be a foolish move, perhaps not ideologically, but popularity-wise it would diminish the current hold they have on the traditional Labor voters as well as a lot of those who traditionally vote Liberal.

I guess one of the most interesting things about this is is that there isn't really anyone else who is a standout , as from that poll, there are possibly a few candidates. Although i don't know what it is like behind the scenes with factional stuff and personal ambitions, so i just cannot predict who will be the next premier.

About goddamn time! that fucking idiot who doesn't drive or take trains has let Sydney's transport infrastructure rot to the stinking core :chainsaw: About time he stood aside since he didn't give a damn about his job responsibilities anyway
