Saw Good Night, and Good Luck today at the Gala. And damn, it is very good. Haven't seen Brokeback yet, but so far he has my vote for best director. I'd like the film to win in art direction too. Best picture, though, is a tough call. Films like this don't tend to win the best picture award.

I'll have to wait till Friday when I see Brokeback here in the gong.

One thing - Roger Deakins should replace Wally Pfister (Batman) for a nomination for best cinematography for his work in Jarhead - which was just outstanding. I’m not sure he should win, as I think perhaps Good Night, and Good Luck is the most deserving.

I’m going to run through the ones I want to win, not what I think will win. If I haven’t seen the film in question I’ll go off previous work from those involved:

Best Picture:
"Brokeback Mountain"

"Capote"
"Crash"
"Good Night, and Good Luck"
"Munich"

Actor:
Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Capote"

Terrence Howard, "Hustle & Flow"
Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain"
Joaquin Phoenix, "Walk the Line"
David Strathairn, "Good Night, and Good Luck."

Actress:
Judi Dench, "Mrs. Henderson Presents"
Felicity Huffman, "Transamerica"
Keira Knightley, "Pride & Prejudice"
Charlize Theron, "North Country"
Reese Witherspoon, "Walk the Line"

Supporting Actor:
George Clooney, "Syriana"
Matt Dillon, "Crash"
Paul Giamatti, "Cinderella Man"
Jake Gyllenhaal, "Brokeback Mountain"
William Hurt, "A History of Violence"

Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, "Junebug"
Catherine Keener, "Capote"
Frances McDormand, "North Country"
Rachel Weisz, "The Constant Gardener"
Michelle Williams, "Brokeback Mountain"

Director:
Ang Lee, "Brokeback Mountain"
Bennett Miller, "Capote"
Paul Haggis, "Crash"
George Clooney, "Good Night, and Good Luck."
Steven Spielberg, "Munich"

Adapted Screenplay:
Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana, "Brokeback Mountain"
Dan Futterman, "Capote"
Jeffrey Caine, "The Constant Gardener"
Josh Olson, "A History of Violence"
Tony Kushner and Eric Roth, "Munich"

Original Screenplay: - I’ve heard marvellous things from squid & the whale, but match point is just, fantastic. woody’s writing is so spot on.
Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco, "Crash"
George Clooney & Grant Heslov, "Good Night, and Good Luck"
Woody Allen, "Match Point"
Noah Baumbach, "The Squid and the Whale"
Stephen Gaghan, "Syriana"

Animated Feature Film:
"Howl's Moving Castle"
Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride"
"Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit"

Art Direction:
"Good Night, and Good Luck."
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"
"King Kong"
"Memoirs of a Geisha"
"Pride & Prejudice"

Cinematography: - this is tricky as new world/good night/brokeback are all fantastic. however the very, very smooth b&w from gn/gl has it.
"Batman Begins"
"Brokeback Mountain"
"Good Night, and Good Luck."
"Memoirs of a Geisha"
"The New World"

Sound Mixing:
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"
"King Kong"
"Memoirs of a Geisha"
"Walk the Line"
"War of the Worlds"

Sound Editing:
"King Kong"
"Memoirs of a Geisha"
"War of the Worlds"

Original Score: - difficult as both brokeback & munch featured superb soundtracks. I’ll go with Williams because it’s the first from him I’ve ever really liked.
"Brokeback Mountain," Gustavo Santaolalla
"The Constant Gardener," Alberto Iglesias
"Memoirs of a Geisha," John Williams
"Munich," John Williams
"Pride & Prejudice," Dario Marianelli

Original Song:
"In the Deep" from "Crash," Kathleen 'Bird' York and Michael Becker
"It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from "Hustle & Flow," Jordan Houston, Cedric Coleman and Paul Beauregard
"Travelin' Thru" from "Transamerica," Dolly Parton

Costume:
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
"Memoirs of a Geisha"
"Mrs. Henderson Presents"
"Pride & Prejudice"
"Walk the Line"

Documentary Feature:
"Darwin's Nightmare"
"Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room"
"March of the Penguins"
"Murderball"
"Street Fight"

Film Editing:
"Cinderella Man"
"The Constant Gardener"
"Crash"
"Munich"
"Walk the Line"

Makeup:
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"
"Cinderella Man"
"Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith"

Visual Effects: - king kong is the winner, but I loved the effects in war of the worlds. they felt that much real, and spielberg used them extremely well.
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"
"King Kong""War of the Worlds"

Original Screenplay: - Ditto Nick, I can't wait to see "The Squid and the Whale". I've got a bad feeling that "Crash" might somehow steal it away. It'd be a travesty, but I think "Crash" will be recognised in one of the major categories.
Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco, "Crash"
George Clooney & Grant Heslov, "Good Night, and Good Luck"

"The Constant Gardener," Alberto Iglesias
"Memoirs of a Geisha," John Williams
"Munich," John Williams
"Pride & Prejudice," Dario Marianelli

Original Song:- No idea, I didn't really like "In the Deep", and I haven't seen the other 2 nominees
"In the Deep" from "Crash," Kathleen 'Bird' York and Michael Becker
"It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from "Hustle & Flow," Jordan Houston, Cedric Coleman and Paul Beauregard
"Travelin' Thru" from "Transamerica," Dolly Parton

Costume:
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
"Memoirs of a Geisha"
"Mrs. Henderson Presents"
"Pride & Prejudice"
"Walk the Line"

Documentary Feature: Penguins by a march. I saw Grizzly Man yesterday, and though I liked it, I thought Penguins was still a bit better. Haven't seen 3 nominees here, but Penguins is probably the surest bet in all categories.
"Darwin's Nightmare"
"Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room"
"March of the Penguins"
"Murderball"
"Street Fight"

Film Editing:
"Cinderella Man"
"The Constant Gardener"

Crash is indie cinema for mainstream filmgoers. But you're probably right - it'll win something. I'm hoping it pulls a Thin Red Line and wins nothing (mind you, it should have won everything).

Gustavo Santaolalla's brokeback work was great, and it was a hard decision. However Munich was something new from Williams. Something a lot more contemporary, and it was used by spielberg very well. I enjoyed Santaolalla's music for motorcycle diaries a more than his brokeback work (it's actually a soundtrack I own), but it is great to see him nominated. Hard one, but yeah, go for Williams. I would still be happy with Santaolalla stealing it - always good to see first timers steal it from the old hats.

It's about the writing of "In Cold Blood", and how it destroyed Truman Capote's life.

i hope stewart isn't restrained by the networks and is allowed to be as irrevent as he should be. then again, chris rock was pretty unhinged last year, so i shouldn't worry.

and on that note, am i the only one who thought rock was the best host ever? he was unpredictable and spontaneous and made everyone uncomfortable, i.e. he was awesome.

Crash winning is a joke.
I thought you liked it?

But yes, you have to quit expecting the best films to win best picture, that's just not the oscars. This year it was actually more disappointing for me that it won best original screenplay, because the screenplay was truly terrible.

All I can say is that I'm embrassed that I take these awards seriously. Crash for best editing? Biggest joke of the night. Neither Hoffman's win nor his lovely speech make up for the shit that is the 78th Oscars.

So who's up for cannes?

I was hoping Jake Gyllenhaal would win for Brokeback, but I'm pretty happy for Clooney to win too.

Hmm.. I thought Crash for original screenplay was worse Nick
