I hate, hate, hate people who say that, because it's so wrong.

People have this idea that 'sci-fi' means stuff like star trek, star wars, bad flashy nerdy stuff. That stuff is shit (except the original series of star trek <3).

Sci-fi is the most beautiful, magic, moving, artistic, and insightful into the human condition, of all genres.

The best sci-fi is the peak of all written fiction.

You need to read any of these novels to fix your brain
Five Great Novels: The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Martian Time-Slip, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, UBIK, A Scanner Darkly: Philip K. Dick: Amazon.co.uk: Books

Especially 'three stigmata of palmer eldritch' or 'scanner darkly'.
I have read a bit of sci-fi to tell the truth!
I did enjoy it (I enjoy reading most things), but I just prefer other genres.

Sci-Fi? Depends what you consider sci-fi.
The ones I enjoyed heaps which I believe to fall in this genre:
1984, Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, Jurassic Park, 20000 leagues, slaughterhouse five.

And a few others, of which I was not so keen that were about time machines and stuff mainly :S

Dan Simmons remains the best scifi I've ever read.
Having said that, i prefer fantasy to scifi.

Hmmm i find this statement hard to swallow. For me stories set in the real world in which i live are the most beautiful as they more directly and more relevantly enrich my own life. But i will put Asimov on my next list of purchases and see if it alters my stance at all.

Watched the film adaptation of A Scanner Darkly the other day. Was pretty interesting, but seemed like the kind of story that definately requires a reading of the original. The film seemed somehow.... lacking. I suspect it loses much of the books impact.

The Obernewton Chronicles (well right up until the last one)
The Farseer trilogy
The Tomorrow Series
Harry Potter
The Alex Cross Series (James Patterson, wonderful books)
Keys to the Kingdom
The Saga of Darren Shan
A series of unfortuanate events
Spiderwick chronicles

I think that's enough to start with :)
