hey guys!

i really want to come to USYD next year but i've been hearing a lot of talk about the uni being very snobby and that a lot of the arts students especially are "up themselves" ( and seeing as i plan on being an arts student this could be a little crappy)
obviously i'm not going to have herds and herds of you coming on here and saying "oh yeah USYD sucks go to another uni" but you know what i mean right? i'm just sort of enquiring about the overall atmosphere and feel of the place...

Short answer, from my experience, is no. People at Sydney are just ... regular people. A lot of these rumours and stereotypes about unis tend to be just that, really.

I don't know many Arts students.. but imo the people in my faculty aren't snobby (in general). MANY are either hardworking geeks or lazy geeks. (lazy geeks = they don't study/work as hard but still care about marks a lot)

Trying to make generalisations around universities with tens of thousands of students is normally not very successful.

Snobs, not really, and whatever snobs there are won't hurt you. Wankers, yes, but even then, it depends on the department (in the Arts, beware of Performance Studies, and the wannabe-diplomats and pseudo-Rhode Scholars in French, for instance, but even then, they're just people too, and you've got to have some really shit luck to not have any normal but interesting people around you). However, the often PC nature of the people can irritate (i.e. males should not talk about the failures of the feminist movement in crowded public spaces lest you be verbally abused by a bra-burning sheila standing next to you; refrain from using coarse language loudly unless you want to be known as that "person that swears too much"; do not to talk about the 'poor' unless in the context of a discussion about exploring the slums of the world for some off-the-beaten-track-'real world'-adventure, or of course, you're doing a course on inequality, or Political Economy for that matter).

At the end of the day, it shouldn't affect you that badly, whatever issues of "snobbery" there may be, just...talk to people (within a reasonable context).

Snobs are generally more drawn to a prestigious university, and USYD certainly satisfies that criterion. However, USYD also draws all other kinds of people, from socialists, to feminists, to Liberals, to anarchists. You will find everyone, and anyone at USYD. Ultimately, you won't talk to the snobs if they're obviously not the kind of people that you'd associate with.

I would actually say that Commerce and Law students are the biggest snobs (too many rich North Shore types), but that seems to be the key everywhere.

if u wanna stay in syd

to go to unsw or uts

uts is good only for technical things

unsw is a bit of a step up from uws. has roundhouse, which is prob the only thing going for it.

usyd is the way to go. plus the parties are massively fucking awesome.

In my experience, USyd students are a lot more friendly than that other built up educational institution, on that mountainside in the Eastern Suburbs. Take that as a defeat of the traditional stereotypes surrounding both universities.

If the person you know is a snob, then they've always been one.. they didnt turn into one when they got 2 syd uni. To whoever is generalising- its called jealousy... oBVIOUslii, the students who go there have worked hard to get there!!

personally i know many people from independant schools whose parents would only accept (and themselves too) going to sydney
