i understand that it's been done, but that was over a year ago, so what are everyone's opinions on a good, most probably second hand, safe, automatic [i want manual but i can't drive it and i don't have enough time to learn =[[.], small, hatchback?

i'm personally in love with the toyota yaris, but i wanted to hear people's thoughts, who maybe even have a yaris/other small car?

thanks heaps =]].

Kia rio is fairly cheap, even new ($12,990) and their safety standards are pretty good.
I looked at a ford fiesta, 2004 model, second hand for around 7,500, with only 80,000 on the metre. also a decent car
The yaris is also good
other cars:
ford focus (expensive)
peugeot (expensive)
holden astra (you can get a food deal on these cheap)
proton
hyundai excel (pretty shitty car really)
hyundai getz (fairly cheap, safe)
hope that helps a bit. You'd be much safer in a larger car, but they are generally more expensive and use much more fuel.

I drive a 2004 Hyundai accent.
Really good to drive safe and lately it has cost <$50 to fill up!

Really depends on your budget. A Toyota Echo isn't too bad, it's also pretty economical as well, just remember that it's better to have someone who knows a bit about cars to go with you when you buy/inspect.

budget is pretty good. i'll need to drive my sisters [age three and five] around quite a bit so my parents will pay for a decent bit to make sure i have a safe car. but not quite sure what the actual budget is, as they haven't decided yet. it depends on the effort i put in at school, haha.

thanks guys =]].

In that case, you should probably look at a medium sized car, maybe a 2005/6 Toyota Corolla (not the current model, the previous one). The Yaris may be pretty good, but I think your parents may prefer you to usher your sisters around in a slightly larger car.

Some Kia, Yaris, Rio have the safety of a rear fog lamp! You never know....

Regardless, if you buy a new car, I advocate you spend $20 - 70 for a Euro warning triangle for it.

Yaris is the best choice over anything else small car.
Plus its 5 star safety rating.

I wouldnt bother with a Kia or Hyundai, they r seriously gay.

My parents bought my sister a Yaris, they were going to buy another one but went with the new corolla cos mum wanted something larger, which is also pretty good but i dont know much about the Hatchback corollas so i can't compare.I would say Yaris especially for a P-plater.

You should try to test drive them to make the decision yourself though. But yes definately have a look at the Yaris.

A4's aren't that expensive, unless you're looking at S/RS4. Easily attainable.

I dunno, if you were willing to get an A3 instead you could get a heaps better engine without losing the badge.

Since when are A4's considered a small car?

I just bought a Peugeot, which will be my second car.

a3's are ugly

i'd prefer an astra or even something like a civic

i really only want a cheap, reliable, reasonable looking car.
