or mario kart DS 4 way....one of us in each corner of the lecture theatre so abuse towards fellow players is heard by all:uhhuh:
way to provide a nuisance or entertaining others who arent playing by shattering the monotony of a mumbling lecturer.
online lecture notes are often a convenience for us these days.

Laptops pretentious?

Depends on context i guess. Maybe if you study maths/science. Very handy for commerce/humanities though. In marketing, we just get given a raft of 20-30 page articles/statistics/assessments and if I had to carry all of them at any given time I would look like the hunchback of Notre Dame. So much easier to keep them as PDF's.

I agree there should be some laptop etiquette. Do not bash the keys, keep it on silent etc. I generally sit up the back where I am less distracting to everyone else (not because I want to be less distracting - the power points are there lol). The one that shits me is when people bring laptops that sound like 747 jets taking off because their fans are stuffed. There is nothing more annoying.

I wasn't saying everyone who takes one to uni is pretentious. I have one myself. Like you said, it's all about context. Some people just have them for the sake of having them and annoy everyone with incessant typing or gaming noises etc. You don't need one for standard lecture notes or tutorial questions (unless it's an essay or something) but not your accounting, maths, eng mechanics stuff. I agree, they are handy for law/commerce/humanities stuff but you don't need one for every lecture or every tute. It's mainly first years, who beg mummy and daddy for one and then make a dick of themselves with it by using it at every instance and most who use one during lectures aren't taking much of the lecture anyways.

Use it when appropriate and it's a wise investment. Also make sure your handwriting is still decent for exams if you are going to use one.

It's Humanities....not attending a lecture would give you the same benefits as attending one, except perhaps being able to line up at Centrelink earlier.

Just a question is it ok to record lectures? On a voice recorder i mean? because i get really distracted trying to take notes and often just miss half the stuff people are saying, i prefer just to listen. Im going to be doing Law/Arts: political and international studies.
most universities already record the lectures then post them on the internet immediately afterwards. Mostly intended for external students, but readily exploited by lazy internal students. Of course the proper lazy don't bother with either.

yes, super jealous as i sit here typing on one of my very own.
As has already been said, by all means have a laptop.. but use it appropriately. The glow of some twat in a darkened lecture theatre playing solitaire our browsing their mates wanky myspace page is more annoying than a confused mature-age student.

Can't see why not. Most unis have iLectures these days anyway. You are paying for their time and expertise, i cannot see what objection they would have to you recording their lectures.

Mind you, half my lecturers forgot to attend ESL class when they were younger so it would be a waste of time for me.

if you contact the uni, give them a notice of your disability, they will provide facilites for you.

either they would record it for you, get in someone to type up the lecture, especially if its one of the bigger unis.

Don't take a laptop, learn to take notes quickly by hand. Your exams will be handwritten so the more practice you can get at writing fast, the better.

Lol, I saw a guy playing WOW on his laptop in a psych lecture once. (Went with friend to a few lectures last year)

Like most people I use a Montblanc Meisterstrück 149. That is the pen you have to write with at university, unless of course you are a gigantic faggot.
