Re: Kevin Rudd Resigns as Foreign Minister

He was hated by everyone within the labor party. He was rolled in the first place because he was a huge cunt in every regard. This is indisputed historical record

ALP's Member for Bendigo: Kevin Rudd 'a psychopath with a giant ego' - most labor MPs in mid 2010 emphatically agreed with that assessment, he was 'Australia's most popular prime minister' of all time, yet he lost to Gillard in a vote for a very good reason. Rudd won elections, parties support leaders who win elections unless they have a very good reason not to.

He was constantly and deliberately undermining the prime minister for the past 8 months, recent comments by Rudd's supporters openly agitating for change would have forced the prime minister to ask for his resignation soon, which would have been hugely humiliating. Gillard couldn't let him stay on, it would appear extremely weak, people already accuse her of not leading the labour party, not expelling Rudd would imply she lacked confidence she had the support of her party. His preferred agenda would have been to continue undermining the prime minister, he has been thwarted by his own supporters who moved too soon. His resignation speech is totally disingenous in blaming the prime minister for inciting division, and bigupping himself as promoting unity (in their actions in the past month).
I dont think you fully grasp the situation you're talking about but nevertheless I cant wait to see the results for the next election. Considering Julz couldnt win against Abbott last time and her popularity has greatly diminished, I wonder if we will have a new prime minister. The only thing going for labor atm is that Abbott is the opposition leader.

Yeah Latika Bourke said she'd been told it'd be on Monday.

Re: Kevin Rudd Resigns as Foreign Minister

It was very unexpected.
It is a bit embarrassing for him, as well as courageous

he was right with what he said: the government is full of faceless men

the government is turning to a soap opera as we speak

were doomed :(

For too long, Kevin Rudd has been putting his own self-interest ahead of the interests of the broader Labor movement & the country. The Party has given Kevin Rudd all the opportunities in the world and he wasted them with his dysfunctional decision making & his deeply demeaning attitude towards other people including our caucus colleagues. He was the Party’s biggest beneficiary then its biggest critic; but never a loyal or selfless example of its values.

Gillard and friends have been very passive and patient for a long time. He shouldn't have had a ministerial job in the first place. Isn't some harsh public ministerial criticism of Rudd needed, in light of the open criticism of Gillard by both Rudd and his supporters?

Without criticism like Swans, they completely get away with saying Gillard is the bad guy, in the court of public opinion. Someone (Swan) needs to publicly say what a large number of ministers strongly feel about Rudd, it would be ridiculous to for there to be no public mention of his apparently contemptible personality.

I don't see why criticism of Rudd would hurt the party electorally at this point.

Re: Kevin Rudd Resigns as Foreign Minister

Swan statement:

Prime Minister Gillard and I and the overwhelming majority of our colleagues have been applying our Labor values to the policy challenges in front of us and we're succeeding despite tremendous political obstacles. For the sake of the labour movement, the Government and the Australians which it represents, we have refrained from criticism to date. However for too long, Kevin Rudd has been putting his own self-interest ahead of the interests of the broader labour movement and the country as a whole, and that needs to stop. The Party has given Kevin Rudd all the opportunities in the world and he wasted them with his dysfunctional decision making and his deeply demeaning attitude towards other people including our caucus colleagues. He sought to tear down the 2010 campaign, deliberately risking an Abbott Prime Ministership, and now he undermines the Government at every turn. He was the Party's biggest beneficiary then its biggest critic; but never a loyal or selfless example of its values and objectives. For the interests of the labour movement and of working people, there is too much at stake in our economy and in the political debate for the interests of the labour movement and working people to be damaged by somebody who does not hold any Labor values. Julia has the overwhelming support of our colleagues. She is tough, determined, forward-looking, and has a good Labor heart. She has a consultative, respectful relationship with caucus while Kevin Rudd demeaned them. She's cleaned up a lot of the mess he left her and has established a good, Labor agenda. She's delivering major reforms, and getting things done that her predecessor could not. Colleagues are sick of Kevin Rudd driving the vote down by sabotaging policy announcements and undermining our substantial economic successes. The Labor Party is not about a person, it's about a purpose. That's something Prime Minister Gillard has always known in her heart but something Kevin Rudd has never understood.

I don't see why criticism of Rudd would hurt the party electorally at this point.
Rudd hasn't openly criticized Gillard, her backers released video footage meant to embarrass him, then Simon Crean and Nicola Roxon went live to air and publicly savaged him, Gillard's office leaks that she's going to sack him in a weak, she refuses to publicly confirm or deny this, finally he says it would be farcical for him to continue in his role and resigns.

It hurts the party because it is backing themselves into a losing corner. He has the public's confidence, Gillard, neither Swan nor Tony Burke and Nicola Roxon do have the peoples confidence, they have polarized themselves against one of the few remaining popular members of the government and exposed themselves to enormous criticism of being out of touch.

Re: Kevin Rudd Resigns as Foreign Minister

Rudd is smart enough to know that he does not have the support of the caucus, even though most voters would hands down prefer Rudd over Gillard.
