Hey,
So i just started uni about a week ago and it hasn't been how i've heard it described. A lot of people talk about how good uni is socially but i much preferred high school in that regard. In high school, most people had friends in every class, we had breaks at the same time so people could hang out with their friends and it was just so much better. In uni, i see a lot of people just sit alone in lectures/tutorials, we dont have the same breaks so it's hard to meet up with friends etc. Even if you do make friends during lectures, in first year most of them are so huge that you never end up seeing them again. If you make friends in tutorials you only ever see them once a week for about an hour. I'm lucky i have a friend from high school who went to the same uni as me because if i didn't i would be bored to death, she's only the person i actually hang out with outside of classes. In high school it just wasn't like this lol, then again i've only had a week so things may get better. Anyone else feel the same way?

This is why you turn your tute and lecture buddies into proper lasting friendships...

no. :)
If you make the effort to meet and keep your friends, then you should be fine :p
remember, there are also more places to meet friends than just classes

Yeah. The descriptions in your recount are almost exactly the same as mine in regards to the social side of uni, and I'm a third year! Same as you, the only friends I have at uni are those whom I went to school with and hung out with, and I agree that school was much better socially. At uni, I do meet people, interact with them, get to know them a bit, help them and vice versa, and sit next to them in lectures and tutes, but they are just good acquaintances at best. I wouldn't necessarily call them friends--I have never hung out with any of them outside of uni. Then again I'm very introverted, and it is very hard to earn my trust, so, maybe that's the reason why (I find that at uni, with different timetables all over the place, you don't have enough time to know people that well, you just know the surface and just some facts about them like you would with friendly but not close neighbours, contrary to school, which you stated). Going to uni though has made me a bit more confident in approaching and introducing myself to new people, which was something I rarely did whilst back in school.

Nope :)
I'm really enjoying uni! Everything is so fun (well except the workload :p) and everyone is so friendly and willing to be your friend!
Have you tried joining a society? They hold heaps of events and itll give you a chance to meet people with similar interests as you

Nop. I mingle with uni people and now I am sort of close to them. Join societies and hang with people.

This pretty much sums up my experiences with uni. I didnt have trouble making friends, it was just I knew that the only reason that we were friends was because we had uni/course/classes in common and it would pretty much end once that went away. So I didnt really invest much into them.

Overall, I found HS much better in terms of friendships - but I guess that's the way I am. I like to keep a small group of friends who I am very close with, as opposed to many friends I dont know that well. So even though I can make "friends", I'm reluctant to really invest much effort unless I see long term potential.

It's been quite fun.

Just socialise. You don't have to refrain from talking to somebody because you're not gonna see them again. I'm finding uni to be much better than high school (but this may be subject to change, as you said, it's only early days) but that might be because my high school experience was craptacular on so many levels. HS was still okay though.

If you're not social then your experience won't be social. You're lucky to have a friend, I don't have anyone.

It really depends on whether you put the effort in to making friends.

I share the exact same sentiment with you OP. I stuck with the same friendship circle in HS from 7-12 and the transition from that to Uni has made be rather disinterested to make new friends. Sure acquaintances, but only within the boundaries of uni. Also UWS doesn't have many interesting clubs/societies at all compared to UNSW which is a bummer. Meh hmu if anyones in tennis club

Well for me, as a first year, I have managed to make one solid friend at Uni, whom I've met up with for lunch a couple times already. We don't even have any classes together, I just started talking to her while I was walking. Other than that, some HS friends are at my Uni who I have lunch with sometimes and who have also introduced me to some of the friends they've made. I'm planning on getting to know the people in my chem prac and econ tute better though, as they seem pretty cool.

IMHO, if you don't consciously try, as in be yourself, you'll make friends easier. (it also helps to be good looking *hair flip*)

Guys.... The uni experience is what you can make of it.... You can get a piece of paper and chill with high school friends ORRRR you can get a piece of paper and make some pretty damn awesome people.

Take your pick.

You've been there a week OP calm down.

I made all of my friends in 2nd sem first year and we still hang out regularly outside and inside uni. I had acquaintances and people to sit with or whatever in 1st sem too but didn't meet anybody I really liked until the next semester so don't try to put some sort of time limit on when you should be making friends you'll only freak yourself out.
Take it day by day and have no expectations and you'll be much happier
