I do 5 subjects (SAC, VA, eng adv, maths adv & biology). I just got my maths marks back for the first assessment and I did shit (32/50).
I'm going well for the other subjects but I'm really worried that maths with drag my atar down... Does anybody have any advice/tips/anything to make me feel better ha..ha

The holidays are coming up so I would use that time to try improve for maths. Just doing 1-2 hour a day in the holidays for it will significantly help you in the long run. Start trying to learn some content ahead and also going back to the old content you had issues in and do questions / practice to resolve those issues. One potential problem could be your approach to math study. If you are studying solely through a textbook it is not a good idea as in a textbook you have the questions outlined in exercises so you just do the same thing over and over, but in practice papers you will have to know which technique / question type is being asked so try to do more papers if you haven't already

Your school should be providing you textbooks in school but sometimes they are overly detailed. Of course, buy textbooks if you feel the need to.
Since the summer holidays are coming up I recommend studying bits and pieces of each subject while referring back to the syllabus. Just build some foundation for the first module of each subject. Remember year 11 is a trial so don't overwork yourself. Still, put dedication and effort tho (srsly dedication is a must I totally flunked prelims)

It's your choice if you want to start straight away. But I think you should wait until mid or end of term 1 to see which subjects you're struggling with.

Tbh in year 11.. it was one of my worst years... So no I didn't have a set timetable but I definitely recommend it. Make sure to make it flexible though cos some days won't go as planned good luck in year 11

Yr 12 is much better for me after trialling with prelims. I just started yr 12 so not the best person to discuss how the atar works but school definitely does make a difference to your atar - assessments, peers and teachers. There's heaps of sites online that explains how school affects your atar.

The only difference school makes is indirect. In a better school there will be harder working students and as such forces you to work harder.
The school itself directly would make no difference to your atar if your a good student.

Just focus on working hard and don’t worry about school and what not.

Trust me in doesn’t. The biggest disadvantage as such is people mucking around in class and distracting you. However a good student will just go home and revise it. It does not matter.

Also don’t think just because a school is selective it has better teachers. The only schools which you know will have better teachers are private schools and that’s a different story... I have many friends that went and go to top 5 selective schools and there’s heaps of teachers that have no idea what they’re doing...
On the contrary I had amazing teachers in a school ranked 200+. For example my Physics teacher had a degree in Physics from usyd and explained everything in detail.

The disadvantages aren’t to the point where it’s going to hurt your atar even if you work hard. As I said in my previous post the disadvantages are really indirect.

Plenty of people that went to rank 200+ schools with good atars, (98+).

I reckon if you go to a school above 200 rank there is like no excuse not to get a good ATAR, if you didn't then you simply didn't work hard enough, the school had no impact on your ATAR.

Mee too me too! but I got like 58% so you're doing better than me. I talked to a bunch of careers advisor's about it and I guess it matters but it doesn't. With the new syllabus, you're probably going to get at least one assignment for maths (which tbh is easy marks) and you've got heaps of holidays to study, plus the first exam is usually only worth like 30% at most and usually about 10 - 15% in my school (idk about yours), you've still for 70% to ace (give or take a little). So if it makes you feel better just know someone out there's on 10 units with 58%, crazy strict parents and a grade average of 80% SO..................

I failed a task in the HSC(Specifically Standard English and got like 45%) which scales MUCH worse than maths and my atar was still in the high 90s. So 58% for a low weighted task? Not as bad as you may think...

Whilst I don't want to speak poorly of the teachers given I went to a selective high, and I definitely think they helped me improve my results, you also have to keep in mind that the difference with a non-selective school is your fellow students all are very capable and also have the goal of maximising their results which often can be enough to help push people to try harder/perform better. There were definitely many great teachers who were inspiring and I feel were probably also inspired by having equally interested students, but then there were also some not so great teachers, and not so great students.

In other words, there's no definitive response to this.
