So is a distinction average considered excellent for first year engineering, or is it pretty common?
Also does anyone know whats the percentage of first year engo students getting credit/distinction/HD?

I think/hope, that it is going to have a positive effect, because as someone mentioned hopefully the extra students are the dumb lot lolol.
I doubt it's going to make too much of a difference though.

How can one's effort be fairly and accurately measured? For example, someone can claim that s/he studies 24/7, yet fail all the exams, and still get dux? lol!
But why do some people study smarter than others? Isn't that to do with their intelligence afterall?
Although, having said that...I think the environment and upbringing is also important...

Now I seem to understand why people don't like geniuses, apart from the envy.
