can someone please explain WHY i have to deduct the curve from the line?

Hey guys, can anyone help me with this question - its been doing my head in for a while. Its question 13, Ex. 3.8. of Maths In Focus: Find the area bounded by the curve y = x² + 2x - 8 and the line y = 2x + 1 Any help is appreciated - worked solutions even more so :]
