Scaling does matter, though not as much as other aspects like whether you enjoy the subject and can do well.

Basically, higher scaling can compensate a bit for a slightly lower mark in a subject (unless it's something with phenomenally high scaling like maths ex 2, in which case you can get a pretty low raw mark but still band 6). In your case, chem has higher scaling than VA but if you're confident that you can do substantially better in VA then dropping chem would be a good decision. Another thing to note is that VA scales really badly if you get a low mark, but if you manage a mid to high band 6 then the scaling isn't as much of a problem (refer to the graph).

I'm not an expert, but usually, subjects that are taken by people who perform better overall have higher scaling. This could also indicate that the subject is harder, though.

As long as u get like 95+ in va u should be fine and As long as u enjoy it u should be fine. Maybe see how u do in the first assessment for chem and see cause if u do good in chem and u enjoy then maybe u should keep it. But if u want to see the scaling of ur subjects try using https://hscscalinggraphs.au/

Just cuz i feel like explaining...

Scaling is a way to make subjects be "worth" the same.
Like for example when someone thinks about physics vs art... and I ask what the harder subject is. Most people would say physics ... why? because it has a math component, understanding shit, time consuming, memorising etc etc. I'm not saying VA is an easy subject, however there is a different requirement of time, effort and talent between the two.

So when it comes to the hsc and a person gets 80 in physics and another got an 80 in art. This graph should give you insight: Screenshot 2025-02-27 at 6.14.19 pm.png

but notice how doing really well in either of those subject scaling doesn't mater, you'll still get a "high" mark used in the atar calculation
It only is worrying if you perform trash in a trash subject

if youre trying to get a 97+ atar, yea. for most people though, no not really. scaling doesnt effect you as much if you score highly in a subject and rank well, as long as you work hard you should be alright.
