Yeah until semester 2 you have no choice but to pay them. Which means for those of us at unis who collect them in a lump sum at the start of semester 1 don't benefit from VSU until next year...

From what I can tell you just make sure to use your manners and they are flattered if you try to speak their language rather than be arrogant and expect them to speak English to you.

There is no specialisation in an LLB. Most law schools have advanced crim as an elective, but thats not a specialisation, its just an elective. Theres only so much you can study about criminal law, the rest is left up to experience.
