i know that this means that interest is compounded every three months, but how do i rework the formula accordingly?

it's good practice because:
- you get used to the conditions you will be tested in [incl. time constraints]
- you become familiar with the paper's structure [hone time management skills + see where your strengths lie, etc]
basically it's applying your notes.
