    Taking a Year Off?

I'm going to go against the crowd here and say I reckon you should get admitted first. A couple of reasons: First, if you plan on going overseas, the Aussie dollar sucks at the moment and hopefully it will improve (but you never know I guess). Secondly, if you get admitted first, when...

Everything you ever wanted to know about mooting but were afraid to ask

Oh man. I feel stupider from having read this thread. In other news, I got slapped out of court today on an application, so my record is back down to 50%. I guess I forgot step 10 in subdued's rules "Don't be shit". I better win this application next week otherwise I'm dropping below...

    Legal Aid Practioner

Holy Moly! $6,000 an hour? Man. They wish. Perhaps $6,000 and upwards per day (even $10k and upwards for some). Certainly not those figures per hour though.

    Superannuation law.

There once was a man who had ideas very similar to your's. You can read about him here: http://www.asic.gov.au/asic/asic.nsf/byheadline/06-338+Gold+Coast+promoter+of+super+rollover+scheme+jailed?openDocument I'm sure there are many other such examples.

    Brief to senior counsel

Assuming you have access to the College of Law Practice Papers through lexis, have a look at Practice Paper CL206 - Briefing Counsel. There are some examples at the end. Briefing a silk is no different, except you would call it a "Brief to [Queen's/Senior] Counsel".

    Drugs in the legal profession

From crikey.com.au: So there you go kids... you got HEAPS to look forward to! :P As a personal real life story, I'm pretty sure one of the solicitors I work with is a coke dealer. Maybe testing isn't such a bad idea.

Law at UQ - any good?

Re: Law at UQ? I find myself doing this on these forums a bit and I swear I don't intentionally set out to stir things up, but: Why? It is based on anything you actually know or just what you perceive to be the case? The difference between studying in Qld and practising in Qld would be...

    Exam Results - Implications

QUT is in the Group of 8? Seems a bit odd. For the record – I personally considered a pass to be a fail and I only "failed" one subject in my degree (damn 70% group assignment subject), but I just don't think it’s the end of the world if that's not your outlook on life. I realise that most...

    Exam Results - Implications

MS: Good marks are *important* in getting an interview, but I wouldn't say they are "by far the most important". You are right - they will get your foot in the door, but they don't do much more than that and if you don't have a good application, extra curricular activities etc etc, you can...

    Practicing Law Overseas

It's like anything - if it's good experience then they will recognise and reward it. If it's questionable experience, then probably notso. Although as a general rule, it would be looked upon favourably as it hass given you a chance to expand your experience base and broaden your horizons...

    HD average in law

Seriously, while it's not impossible, it's pretty friggin rediculously difficult. Even the people who go close end up getting 6.9something because they "bomb out" in 1, 2 or 3 subjects and get a 6. I think 2 or 3 people at my uni had got all but 1 HDs, but noone had ever pitched a perfect...

    Unemployment after Graduating

In terms of the oversupply being a "beatup", I'm sure that there are graduates out there who find it difficult to find a job, but in my experience it's for one of the reasons I outlined before. I definitely don't think it's as bad as some would have you think. And about the non-sandstone unis...

    Unemployment after Graduating

I'm still not sure about this "over-supply". Is this something you've actually observed or seen evidence of or is it just what you perceive to be the case? I mean, how many unemployed lawyers do you know? You can't even open Lawyer's Weekly or any of those other trashy lawyer magazines without...

    Unemployment after Graduating

At the outset, I'm not sure where this view that there is an over-supply of lawyers comes from, as it's contrary to what my experience and what appears to be the case in the market generally. The universities don't just keep cranking up the number of law places without reference to what is...

    Lost Chinese Learned Friend?

I think the fact that his oral argument is lacking is more due to the fact that he doesn't actually have a clue what he is talking about, rather than the fact that he is a solicitor.

    What is "soft law"?

Re: Hey, 'soft law' question It's "law" in it's loosest sense. Like all international "law". Sif anyone listens to that.

What's it like being a lawyer?

Ok - I haven't posted for quite some time. In fact, the last time I posted I would have been in final semester law. I have now finished my degree and a PLT course and will (hopefully) get admitted on 11 September (next admission date up here in Brisbane). While I am not yet a solicitor, the work...

    Legal Advice - Property Issue

Re: Personal Legal-ish issue Just say "It's my goat porn and you're not gonna take it from me!" But seriously, if you have whatever it is, (which is how I read it) then I'm with fridgy - Simply invite them to pursue their perceived legal rights in whatever way they see fit.

    Legal Advice - Inheritance situation

Re: Help! - The kind of situation you always fear when someone dies.... You may have a leg... it could get messy. These things are never pretty. How did she grant the property in trust to the son? Depending on the type of property there are various requirements of writing to effect a...

Academic Advice - Law Lawyers & Society, Law Lawyers & Justice

Re: Law Lawyers & Society, Law Lawyers & Justice Claim the exemption and spend a couple of days going through the notes yourself and maybe go to a few of the lectures. If you've got the motivation to do it yourself (which you would) you'll get the same out of it and not have to do the assessment.
