thats a lot lower than i thought , actually, considering most unis only take the top 30% of students in each year.
surpised that so many ppl drop outa uni though

hmm... i know a few ppl who dropped out in first year.. but i didn't think the numbers would be so high.
it doesn't really sound fair for those who don't get a place- maybe some people should think 'seriously' if uni is the way to go before they apply?

I think the drop out rate also applies to transfers.

I guess a lot of people change their minds when they get to uni and it isn't what they imagined what they imagined it would be.

True, it isn't fair, but that's the system.

Actually that certainly is surprising; I thought the percentage would be considerably higher.

Hmm that is strange, the passage reads "The latest figures are based on people who qualified for a course but missed out because there were not enough places, otherwise known as "unmet demand"."

It may be referring to people that qualified for last years cutoff?! I dont know.

my old careers teacher told me 1 in 3 or 4 people would either choose not to go to uni or wouldn't make it in, so these statistics actually seem good compared to the 25-33% amount of people i always thought weren't making it in.

I am not surpised by the figures. I actually know alot of people that didn't get in to uni & there is already a fair number that has already dropped out of nursing...hmm...that probaby explains why the lecture threater looks less crowded.

with regard to the 1 in 10 thing

firstly it only refers to those who applied for uni places. Many more people simply didn't apply to go to uni (either they dropped out in year 10, which around 25% of people did apparently, or they went to TAFE, or they are now moving on to employment or apprenticeships straight away)

secondly, "after double counting of applications was discounted, about one in 10 Australians who sought a university place in 2004 missed out". that might mean that those people who got more than one offer were regarded as multiple people who gained an offer, therefore reducing the number of people who missed out (not true in practice)

Yep, theres no point being negative about things, negativity is just an excuse to have a whinge about stuff. :D
