what does these mean?
For example
43.4 Mathematics Extension 2
27 Biology
24.5 Society and Culture
where
more than 25 means scale up
25 means average
below 25 means scale down

what does that mean?
Does it mean if you get 25/50 in maths extension 2 you get 43.4/50??
HELP

Yes and no.

No, because it just means that those courses had above average scaling - the higher the scaled mean was above 25, the better the scaling was. You can't apply it on an individual basis because you don't know anything about raw marks.

But assuming you did know something about raw marks - yes, because it would mean that a raw mark of 25/50 (after all marks have been standardised to a mean of 25 and stdev of 12) would have been scaled up to 43.4/50. In more general terms, an average mark in that course would have ended up as a very high scaled mark.

I see, so does the scale marks apply to the calculation of UAI or the Exam marks??

Uhh. Sorry? :)

Only raw HSC marks are scaled. The raw HSC mark is the average of the raw exam mark and the moderated assessment mark.

They're not scaled separately... and the resulting scaled marks are used for calculating UAIs.

So Laz, say for ext2 maths, an average of 50/100 would of been scaled to 86.8? according to that data?

Yes. Remember that you're referring to raw marks, which are never released by the Board.

So are you saying that the scale mark (e.g. Biology 27) is used in determining HSC EXAM marks from Raw mark??

lazarus, talking about ext 2 maths

what happens if u acheive above this scaled mark / just below average raw mark ? given this last years stat. would it fluctuate in a ratio for example ?
Thanks

UAC releases some (very limited) statistics every year; you can find them on their website.

I have no idea what you mean.

Yes - a simple linear transformation is used to derive scaled marks from raw marks.

"I have no idea what you mean."

Ok ok, let me ask you again Laz, What are scale marks (27 biology) used to determine?

They're not used to determine anything... ? The scaled marks of your best 10 units are added to form your aggregate, which is converted to a UAI...

It was intentional... :) You'll notice that it's staying at 2003... :)
