I go to a top ~130 school, what ranks/marks would I be looking at to get a 95+ ATAR? Typically our school gets a couple of (around 5ish people) with a 95+ atar and the highest last year was a 98. Any predictions?

engadv (13/68), biology (5/55), ancient (2/13), history ext (2/8), legal (1/39), pdhpe (1/60) with marks in the range of 85-100%
No maths! Anyways, you should really take advantage of the subjects your coming 1st in your cohort as if you also top externally you'll have 100% control over your hsc mark for that subject (which currently legal & pe, though you can probs do so for all ur other subjects except eng where the gap is a bit bigger). 95 is doable for sure as ur ranks r really good, though doing well in trials and boosting urself to maybe a total of 4-5 1st would be even better, then u wouldn't have to worry about ur cohort dragging ur mark down for a few subs and give yourself plenty of room to pop off externals.

An estimate would be hard without knowing the capabilities of ur cohort, u could try chucking ur marks rn into an atar calculator to see for urself though this is not really accurate as school assessments' difficulties may vary to the actual hsc.

As mentioned above, a 95+ ATAR is definitely possible given your current ranks. You are already in the top part of your cohort for all your subjects. You need to ensure you maintain your current position beyond this point and (if possible) try to improve your English Advanced rank as not only will a better rank give you a better chance of reaching your desired ATAR, but your 2 units of English will count regardless of your performance in the rest of your subjects, meaning English will affect your ATAR no matter what. Your trial exams constitute a great opportunity for you to maintain your favourable position in most of your subjects as well as improve your English Advanced rank.

Once trials are over, your focus will shift to the HSC exam. This is where actual marks become very important. In order to maximise your chances of reaching a 95+ ATAR, you need to perform to the best of your abilities so that you can maximise your marks, allowing you to achieve your ATAR goal. In terms of what final HSC marks (that is, the average of your assessment mark and HSC exam mark) you need for a 95+ ATAR, you will essentially need as many band 6's/E4's as possible. Here's an outline of what kind of final marks you should be aiming for:
  • English Advanced - 85
  • Biology - 91
  • Ancient History - 91
  • History Extension - 46
  • Legal Studies - 91
  • PDHPE - 91
Of course, if you can manage higher final marks in any of your subjects (particularly English), that will only put you in a much better position and will ultimately allow you to achieve your ATAR goal.

I hope this helps! 😄

Thank you so much for your reply!! This is very helpful in keeping a goal mark for each subject now :)
