what is the difference between B civil engineering and the other civil degrees such as structural, geotechnical, etc. I am just curious if you can specialise in a particular field or not, and if you can, what is the point of having just a plain civil engineering course when there are other "specialising" degrees in the sam uni.

if u enroll at usyd in B Engineering you will have to choose a specialisation in 3rd year anyway . You will have free electives to choose from and the choice you make determines what specialisation you will take (structural, geotechnical...).

All civil engineers take the same core subjects but in 3rd and 4th year depending on ur specialisation you will choose different electives.

And trust me it is better to be specialised in the workforce anyway

1) civil engineering is the course you choose and geotechnical, structural etc are the fields of civil engineering you can choose to specialise in...therefore yes..u can specialise

2) if your uni offers offers civil engineering, it won't offer structural and geotechnical engineering as separate degrees/courses. you get the option to choose which of these you wanna study as part of the civil engineering course tho. the "plain" civil engineering courses are there if you're not sure what you want to specialise in and gives you the chance to choose subjects from different fields as electives. in the end the only difference between a specialised and plain degree is a few subjects
