The text list is not online because the shop has had problems with another nearby shop, Text in the City matching their prices.

You can get the list if you go into the shop, but you can't take it out of there.

What are you talking about re the 29th? Do you mean the census date?

The list will probably be online this weekend onwards, although I'm sure you could be a big girl and either go into the shop or get a list off your lecturers.

You can get a list off your lecturers but I've found they are much too lazy to bother doing so and usually place it up in the slides for the first lecture.

Text In the City - haha

If you're a sweet lemon, you could tell me what units you're doing, and I'll put up the book titles and their price.

Possibly.

No, the list is about 30 pages.

You shouldn't be doing those two 200 level HISTS, unless educ106 is very easy. 200 level historiography subjects are very difficult...

Also, you know that the war and peace (243) is very feminist based, right? I was about to do it, but, frankly, I'm not into social history at all, and feminist lecturers are ghey.

(1) Class Paper 2005: 20%
Instructions
The class paper is also known as a 'tutorial paper'.

The class paper is 1,500 words in length and it must be received by the Centre for Open Education on or before Friday 2 September 2005 at 4pm.

The class paper is worth 20% of your total mark for this course.

There is a choice of three (3) questions for this submission:

(A) Ancient Worlds
1. Choosing either (1) ancient Greece or (2) ancient Rome or (3) ancient China or (4) ancient India explain why war was so fundamental to social and political organization. Was it ideology or necessity that drove the ancient worlds to war?

(B) Frontier Wars
2. Compare and contrast the European-indigenous encounter in Australia with that of New Zealand. In what ways were these encounters 'wars'?

(C) War and Empire
3. Choosing either (a) the "Indian Mutiny"; or (b) the "Boer War" of 1899-1902, explain how imperialism provided the political and cultural impetus for conflict.

Research Essay 2005: 40%
Instructions
Unlike the 'class paper', the research essay is based on more than the tutorial readings. It is an extensive and thorough analysis of research materials on a specialised topic of study.

The research essay is 2,500 words in length and it must be received by the Centre for Open Education on or before Friday 14 October 2005 at 4pm.

The research essay is worth 40% of your total mark for this course.

There is a choice of six (6) questions for this submission:

(A) GENDER AND THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918
1. Assess just what role the First World War had in the granting of suffrage to women in Britain in two stages in 1918 and 1928.

OR

2. How were notions of masculinity evoked during the First World War to spur recruitment and what were the effects on soldiers engaged in trench warfare?

(B) WAR AND AUSTRALIAN IDENTITY
3. How did engagement with the war in the Pacific alter Australian self-perceptions of national identity?

(C) WAR, GENOCIDE AND ETHICS
4. In what ways are ethical decisions in regard to the value of human life disregarded in times of War? What are the ramifications of this? Using examples of EITHER (a) Hiroshima; or (b) thew Holocaust, explain how values and ethics are reappraised during times of war and how these are products of both expediency and ideology.

(D) WAR AND POSTCOLONIAL IDENTITY
5. Assess Fanon's powerful depiction of French colonialism in Algeria and its affect on the colonized. Why was winning important for the Algerians?

(D) ISSUES OF PEACE

"All we are saying is give peace a chance."
- John Lennon

6. Choose one example of an anti-war protest movement to discuss the ways in which anti-militarism and commitment to peaceful resolution faced political obstacles.

Apparently the course is changing a lot....

Ack, those essays look tempting, but I don't want any feminazi bullshit. I'll have to email the convenor. Even the male tutor in it has "feminist theory" as his research are.
