Hey guys, i didnt make it to med this year due to a shit umat score my uai seemed reasonable i got 96.00, and i know people who got 96 who made it to med this year, my question is that i applied this year with EAS, i got into pharmacy at usyd this year if i pursue that for a year and reapply for med doing well for umat this year, i hear some universities use an average 50:50 between GPA/UAI do i still apply with access as a NON school leaver?. since my UAI was disadvantaged?.

Re: EAS
You are not eligible to apply if you are currently undertaking
or have previously undertaken tertiary study. (Tertiary study
includes diploma, advanced diploma, associate diploma,
degree or higher level studies undertaken either in Australia
or overseas).
Some institutions have special consideration schemes for
applicants who have a record of failure and/or exclusion at
tertiary study due to circumstances beyond their control.
For UNSW there is Special Consideration for Applicants with Tertiary Study (SCATS)

Edit: yay the sig was shrunk:D

Can't accept advice yet still asks for it.

The issue is width...you do know most laptops do not use the same resolution settings as desktops? You do know not everyone uses the same resolution settings with the same size screen as you? You do know that I wasn't having a go at you but was giving you advice that it is a pain in the ass to have to scroll right along to read your posts? You do know people (such as me as an example) will not always bother with your question when it is a task to read and you act like an arrogant tool?

------

Then why did you bother posting something so useless? You obviously read his post, making the little effort to scroll a couple of mm to the right (nothing to bitch about in the first place, you'll live). Just fucken leave the post if you were that dissatisfied, or help the guy out.

Look's like you're the arrogant tool.

Dear Tool,

Where were my manners? How silly of me to offer to help to the person. Not simply offering the answer to the questions but also telling him it would be much easier if his signature was smaller allowing people to easily read his posts!

But it's all okay! Next time I offer the answer to someones post I will be sure to PM you about it and wait for you to pass judgment. I thank you for your advice oh great moral compass.

Regards,

im a little confused, am i understanding this right, im applying to med school end of this year (eg unsw who use 50:50 UAI:GPA), my only code in EAS was coming from a disadvantaged school (PSFP) can I apply for access towards my UAI not my GPA, because i wudnt be disadvataged at uni, like i did in year 12?.

If you recieved ACCESS/EAS last year, it will automatically apply to your uai at UNSW next year as they keep records and EAS/UAI lasts for up to 7years(only if you haven't undertakedn university studies, etc).

This was also confirmed to me by the medfac via email.

However, I can explain that those whoapply to Medicine after they do 1 semester of study at University will havetheir HSC result and their University result taken into consideration. Thismeans that if they previously applied through ACCESS, the high schoolresult will include ACCESS point.

hey anonymous2003 i'm thinkin of doing the same thing. Currently I'm in BSci(adv) at usyd and plan on going to unsw med nxt year (provided i have a good GPA). I haven't read anything about UMAT coming into consideration if you've done one year of tertiary study - 50% from UAI and 50% from GPA - for MBBS at UNSW. Hopefully they recognise applicants whom aren't studying at UNSW

ohh k thats shud be good then ill definately see ya at usyd:D, im doing pharmacy i hope to do well this year, just if my umat was a little better:( i just needed around 175 coz im a GWS student id have even made into UWS, personally i dont care where i go around OZ, im happy to do med anywhere:(, and the more disappointing fact is that i spoke to a total of 5 people who got offers from very good unis e.g unsw/uws and they all declined the offer for something like dentistry/pharmacy/physiotherapy instead. pisses me off to see that people who are not even committed are given the opportunity to do a course that others can only dream of, all because of the fact that we couldn't do well in the UMAT, which is just absolute bullshit. anyone have any ideas on how i can improve my section 2?, i managed to do well in sect 1 and 3 ~60-65 each just my section 2 was a total BITCH.

All applicants are treated the same and none of the med-fac apart from admin knows where you are from, your uai, whether you got EAS, etc. This is to prevent bias and prejudice within the interview.

All first year non-standard applicants have a 50% UAI and 50% GPA(Max 99.5 equivalancey at UNSW) + UMAT to be ranked and considered for an interview.

You need UMAT as with all universities except JCU to be considered for a non-standard place.

Edit: You should read by post in UNSW Med Camp, i bagged out students of foreign backgrounds many of who do med for the wrong reasons and those who miss out usually give up and don't give a sh*t anymore and do other highly regarded courses such as law, etc totally different fields now that really pisses me off and it's one of the reasons Umelb has gone post-grad.

Also alot of people who get into med just do it coz they can and wouldn't do it if they didn't get in first go, this is the case with 8 people at my school even though they did brilliantly and claimed they wanted to do med so much they have all given up except for myself. Many med rejects do other highly regarded courses such as dent, law, pharmacy as a backup.

Hmm, section 2 is very hard to improve at in the short term, best thing you can do is socialise more, do volunteering work esp at places such as 'lifeline' where you will be trained to assess your contact and take relevant measures. Read more and try to interpret more emotions, etc. I guess section 2 is really subjective and depends on the person really.

i agree with your point of view 100%, in my belief its okay to have section 1-3, but section 2 shud be completely eliminated, i mean for example asking someone how they would feel in a particular scenario is completely stupid, everyone is an individual we all feel different degrees of emotion, someone might get pissed by a particular situation, whereas someone else could feel firedup by the same scenario, it all depends on who the person is. how the fuck are u meant to know whether they're simply "annoyed" or "Furious". This treats emotion like its some simple concept that just happens, emotions are much more complex, and there could be a mix of two emotions at once its just ridiculous.

Personally i dont think being good at english is super helpful i got 88 in advanced english and look at me fucked section 2 pretty shit. This is exactly why i didnt do too well in section 2, because sometimes if ur luck supports you ull think how the dude writing the paper thought.

They should give opportunity to students who got a uai over 95ish and use umat section 1-3 plus put most weightage at the interview, not the other two as UNSW and many other unis do. Personally im still quite motivated to do medicine because i really want to do it. Whats discouraging is that people who lack the motivation to do medicine for personal satisfaction get in, and u dont because u bummed one little thing.

On a more good note i spoke to a few people who got uais of ~96 2007/2006/2005 and some of them made it in with a GPA of about 6/ UMAT 175, who were all non school leavers, which gives us some reassurance that the doors of university MBBS are still open to those willing to pursue it to the ends of the earth. Wooz if ur really into medicine, don't let ur confidence down it will keep u alive and eventually ull secure a place in med at any uni u desire.

it's gonna be a pain in the ass to get into Med at either usyd or unsw. I would like to do the BDent at usyd once I graduate, but I've got mr GAMSAT in the way. If I don't make it, and this is the sad but possible truth, then i'll be stuck with an advanced science degree that would be of relatively little use.

Try going for a dent degree interstate, quite a few of my friends got offers from griffith. It's a bit risky putting all your eggs in one basket and hoping to get into post-grad dent at Usyd, well atleast you can study properly for Gamsat unlike umat.

hey Wooz, how did u go in the HSC/UMAT and were u successful in getting interviews?. Also from another post uve written this "I have even flown to regional centres in the last two years to exp the problems of rural medicine. For the last two years i have been liasing with the RAAF(3 Combat AeroMedical, RAAF Richmond) and yeh they've flown me out to a few RAAF bases and airports; Wagga, Tamworth, Brisbane and Townsville to exp the medical facilities, expertise, regional medicine and aviation medicine." could you give me some details on that?. Im interested in that, and id like to find out more on it and whether id be eligible for it as well.
