If your looking at doing asian studies, then maybe you should have a look at ANU. I don't know much about the asian side, but i was looking at ANU as a back-up for uni of syd for myself, and it seemed to have a very large asian, and particularly south-east asian, focus.
ANU is still a prestigeous uni, its just got low UAI's cause no one wants to move to Canberra.
