Should I just attempt other schools' trial SA questions instead of doing past hsc short answers that are unlikely to be asked again? Thoughts?

You shouldn't be doing past short answer questions for the sake of knowing whether or not they will be asked in the HSC. You should be doing any and all short answer questions (that are contextually relevant) in order to refine your responses as well as knowing what details to include or exclude in your answers.
