Anybody studying creative arts/communications. help!!!!

Im absoultley confused. before you start i want to apologise for the long thread.

I want to study creative arts could be (Directing, screenwritng, producing) but here's my situation. could end up being one until i find what im comfortable with.

i thought about uts communications degree( in media arts and production) but im not to sure on that one?

are student filmmakers missunderstood in a university environment? would i better off going to a place like the Australian film, television and radio school to be with people on the same wave length.

now heres my othe dilema  :( my carees adviser said the following to me

all the usual stuff that goes with the film indistry ie: industry that protects its own, tough to find work. etc like buisness is any easier to find work in.

anyway he wants me to find another career. he also goes on about how i will get no where with standard english. i was meant to do advance. but here's a long story short. my mum died when i was in yr 10. did good at english in yr 10. moved to yr 11 completley new skool get stuck in standard english. fuck.

My english skills are good. what am i to do?

also ive read in an increaing number of courses the need to eat as well as peform/direct has become recognised and traing is now offered in 2 or more roles in the industry. and that courses specialising in arts/cultural administration, conservation, education, buisness and promotion. these on a whole have been said offer more secure careers than others.

any help or information would be of much help to me.

hey colossus, i wanted to do media arts n production at UTS too, or writing and contemporary cultures and major in screenwriting.. in the end I had to choose what I wanted to do more and what I thought would have better job opportunities- visual arts, or screen arts. I chose visual arts..

umm what exactly are you not sure on the UTS MAP course? well, if you're interested in directing, producing and screenwriting, it's definitely the course to go to. You can end up majoring in a certain focus after seocnd year or osmething (it's a three year degree). It's a fairly technical course- a lot of it is learning about film-making, and the actual making of the films, not all this wafty crap like theories and analysing films and shit. Go to UNSW communicatons course for that :p j/k

umm.. film makers will be feckin misunderstood in _all_ environments heh. But.. you can't go to the AFTRS. They won't let you go I do'nt think, ont straight out of high school. From my previous enquiries you had to have done some sort of course before they let you get into the AFTRS, or at least have some sort of experience. Think of it more as a postgrad experience thing..

Though, try and go to these short coruses if you're itnerested in it. Especially if you're in year 11.. in the summer, they have this short course thing called "summer skill' which is basically a whole bunch of lectures on various components of film making and screenwriting and radio/television productions.

Umm. You do realise now that there aren't any pre-requisites for uni entry now? or, very little anyway, and well for what you're interested in, none at all. Like, advanced english is 'recommended' for MAP, but like you say- if you're sure you are good at english then it's all sweet. it's not so much exactly what you learn in the HSC which you need at uni... it's more the skills you develop.

So, if you're doing MAP, then you'd need to have some sort of knowledge about film techniques... how to analyse films..etc, just basic knowledge.

sorry too for the long post, just tryin to help :)

tha's aight man. umm, take a look at the UAC guide it'd know better than I would.. there'd be some courses at say, CSU (charles sturt) or UWS which would require a less psychotic UAI score than UTS does (UTS Map is something like 96 or 97, well it was last year anyway).

Yes, AFTRS is better than UTS in that it's a specialised school. It'd be like comparing NIDA with.. CSU for dramatic studies. CSU is good for undergrad, but you really can only get into NIDA if you're amazingly crazily talented and have had some sort of experiences in the dramatic arts alreayd.

i would suggest doing a one year course at UWS or uni of wollongong or something, in screen studies, or ocmmunications, and then trying to transfer into the UTS MAP course if it's really what you wanna do but can't get into it.

Or, alternatively, there's a whole bunch of private tetriary places available.. though, they cost a fair bit.

yup sounds like a plan dude.. you'd definitely get into AFTRS if you have a sexy degree up your sleeve

problem is.. the money. Costs a bomb to do any course at AFTRS. check out their site.

and yeah worse comes to worse.. work your way up, do part-time work on set and do short courses at various institutions and work your way up as they say..
