How and why does this happen, (if it does). I remember reading about it on some UAC brochure, but my friend said it's not true, and I don't understand the logic involved.

"it is moderatley hard, but dont forget, when they changed from the uai, to the atar, they now rank you against ALL students that were in year 7 (at the time you were in year 7), and as a result you dont exactly need to be in the top 20% of HSC students. its more like top 30%, which is still slightly difficult."

I never understood this either......

But, regardless, you'd still try and get every mark possible. :)

It's just how they define the ATAR. Just leave it at that and go with your merry life.

I thought we get compared to other year 12 students undertaking the HSC in 2011 :/ is it a co operative comparison? man there should be a brochure or something that FULLY explains how all this works by the UAC, and it should be concise, provided with relevant examples.

Its so that everyone can get better atars and feel better about themselves. If you're in the top 50% of your yr12 cohort, instead of getting an atar of 50 compared to everyone who sits the hsc you get around 70.
