anybody know of any good short stories (preferred) or novels that provide a solid theme of belonging

If it helps, there's a story in A Dream of Stars by Brian Caswell (it's a collation of short stories) that's about belonging - or it seemed like it to me anyway. I think it was Five-Finger Discount but the actual A Dream of Stars short story works too.
