Hi, I'm just finishing up my HSC this year and B Econ at USyd is my first preference.
I was just wondering what the course is like, what the majors are and how much maths is really involved in Economics.

Thanks!

That link clearly explains the structure of the degree and majors.

1st Year economics doesn't require that much maths. If you have a basic handling of 2u maths (abit of calculus, straight line algebra, can add and subtract :p ), you will be fine.

Starting 2nd year eco, the maths component takes a big leap. Intermediate micro (in my opinion) felt like 75% maths, 25% theory/intuition. Macro is less math-sey but the numbers game starts getting abit much for someone like me, who doesn't grasp numbers easily. It's not not do-able but uni economics is NOTHING like high school economics. The concepts sound familiar but you are expected to derive and analyse things and that, of course, has to involve maths.

From what I've experience, I have a feeling the maths component gets heavier as you go along, I guess.

If you intend to do honours then be prepared to take extra maths units as a requirement plus 3 units of econometrics as a minimum (Ecmt 1010, 1020 and Regression Modelling).

It's not like the maths components won't be taught (some are assumed) but just don't come into an economics major expecting HSC style economics.

Actually, so far Macro does seem like 2 unit Economics. But then again, this is like week 8? so yeah. Micro is very different from high school though.

Intro macro is, I guess, but I found it more demanding than 2u economics even though the content is similar.

It is basically 2 unit economics with extra graphs and calculations added to the end of each topic imo.

If you wanna become a professional economist or want to go into pursure research/academic work then youll need to do honours in economics. In usyd honours starts in 2nd yr with pre honours course (so basically preparing you for honours). This continues into 3rd yr and then u have to keep a certain average to get into 4th yr honours.

The subjects are pretty mathsy. The further you go in economics the more mathematical it becomes.

If youre not gonna do honours, then the maths in econ is pretty minimal.
